The Tao Of Motherhood

Imagine taking the comfort-filled nurturing of Mother-Love and condensing it down to 81 endowments from the Tao Te Ching, repurposing them and offering them back into the world in a new form as a gift to mothers. Author of Infant Massage, massage therapist and Founder of The International Association of Infant Massage Instructors, Vimala McClure has brilliantly accomplished a fusion of ancient and modern teachings in the 20th Anniversary Edition of The Tao of Motherhood.

Vimala considers motherhood a spiritual practice that integrates beautifully with her own path of the Sanskrit concept of madhuvidya or sweet knowledge. Like all paths, motherhood brings with it joys and challenges and she honors them all in this soothing teal blue softcover embellished with a mama fish and baby fish swimming close by.

Each page contains tasty tidbits that are as nurturing to the heart and soul as rice pudding and homemade chocolate chip cookies could be for the body.

Sweet samplings include:

Perspective: “Remember that you and your child are travelers through infinite time. How you interact is important enough to change lifetimes of karma; yet it is an insignificant drop in the ocean of relationship through which you both move. Keep in mind the endless nature of being , and your journey will gain perspective.”

The Particular: Be open to your child’s individual needs and expression. One child needs stimulation, the next needs quiet. One needs to be carried all the time, another likes to play nearby with the freedom to extend his limbs. A wise mother knows: There is no good child and no bad child. Only this child.”

The delicate imagery of lotus flowers, water spouts, the aforementioned fish, a stone like sculpture of a mother and child are rendered in soft line drawing form by artist Tracy Cunningham.

A Box Full of Darkness
This image zapped me yesterday and at first I didn't want to look at it, or even acknowledge it. I much prefer to live in light than in darkness. Paradoxically, my work as a therapist over the past 3 decades has been with people who sit in shadow, cast out by those who were supposed to protect and n

Overheard in the bathroom at the gym recently : there was a young woman who was there with a friend and looked in the mirror and said "I look like shit today."  My initial inclination was to mind my own business, since what I had to say might not be well received. She didn

Living Legacy-Zach Sobiech
There are some moments  when the petty, day to day annoyances melt away in the face of the fireball sun realization that life is fleeting, experiences are transient and people are on loan to us. Last night, when I watched the You Tube viral phenom video called My Last Days (On Rainn Wilson's Soulpa

Ecclectic Enthusiast
Recently I was speaking with someone who felt dismayed that she wasn't able to focus on any one career path, interest or purpose. She referred to herself as a "Doomed Dabbler", destined to wander aimlessly in the wilderness with no hope of finding refuge. As we spoke, within moments, a lightbulb wen

Woo woo vs. Whoohooo!
Once upon a time, I would have considered some of the events of my life to be  fodder for Twilight Zone episodes, with the theme song (do do do do do do do do~) playing in my head when they would occur. I didn't dare talk about them, out of concern for being thought weird or  committable
