In a feng shui seminar I once took, teacher Nancy Santo Pietro told us to always unplug appliances when they weren’t in use because they can still produce an electro-magnetic field that can create health problems over time (ranging from subtle to severe depending upon length and proxmity of exposure, plus one’s sensitivity).
I do believe that sleeping with your head close to a digital alarm clock for 50 years is not a great idea, but the notion that appliances drain energy from an outlet when turned off seemed incredible to me. It was one of those bits of information I intentionally go to workshops to gather, but then can’t deal with right away.
Well, guess what? In the wake of last week’s heat wave, an article in today’s New York Times explains how televisions, computers, cell phone chargers and other common appliances do indeed use electrical current when off and hanging out in “standby” mode. While the newspaper approaches the topic purely from the standpoint of energy conservation, the feng shui/EMF wisdom is lingering in there.
Any way you cut it, it IS best to unplug appliances when not in use, when possible. What a hassle. But what do you know…

I understand what you are saying, but I can’t imagine plugging and unplugging the tv, lamps, microwave, etc. Ugh………….>

I can beextra sensitive at night to the point I get paranoid. But by sleeping in a room with 3 towers, 1 laptop, a cellphine, floorlamp, monitor and speakers can help desensistise one.>

I always wondered whether our TV’s “convenience feature” (AKA standby) wasn’t also sucking energy, but at a slower rate. The User’s Guide omits this entirely. Now that I know the score, off it goes, all the way. Thank you for this heads up. BTW, your comment that it’s not such a good idea to “…sleep with your head close to a digital alarm clock for 50 years…” hit home. Last month we were guests in a state-of-the-art palazzo, Texas style. Our room had a bed the size of a football field and a BIG headboard with MANY controls for all the electronics. This included lighting, A/C, TV, stereo, jacuzzi, fireplace and some other things we didn’t understand. We slept with our heads at the foot of the bed, in the end zone.

First of all the earth gives off electromagnetic induction. So time to leave the earth. Secondly the EMF that your appliances give off with the exception of a few leak it into their circuit boards to keep them on an instant on condition and preserve their useful live. There are nuts everywhere, pretty soon women will blame vibrators for cervical cancer.>
