The checking of the watch in a compulsive way accomplishes at least two things, neither of them positive. The first is to impose your stress on any and all around you. The second is to become even more stressed, turning yourself ever tighter in frustration. Strangely, as distressing as it is to do this, there is also something about this extremely high anxiety state that is almost compelling. I would not be surprised to see some very interesting neural-chemical processes at work, and at the risk of going way out on a limb, I suggest they may share similarities with cocaine.
