The Church Basement Roadshow

Best BBQ?

Saturday July 26, 2008

Categories: On the Road, Tour

We've been to a lot of cities so far, and it's funny how many people in these cities claim that they are:

- The buckle of the Bible belt

- The least churched city in America

- The city with the most witch covens per capita

- The city with the best Bar-B-Que

Well, we don't know about the first three, but we're doing our best to determine the truth about the fourth. Yesterday we stopped at Dreamland, a spot that was frequented by Mark two decades ago. It was good, not great. I liked the sauce, but the meat was sub-par. Doug gave high marks to The Joint in New Orleans, and I liked Gates in Kansas City.

We'll update you on the BBQ in the coming few days.

Hope you can reschedule the C B Roadshow through Austin/Central Texas for a lot of reasons. One is the world-class BBQ tour through Taylor, Elgin, Bastrop, Lockhart, and Luling (among others close by). You may need to take a mini-sabbatical rest stop. Maybe all the cohorts in the area (Austin, San Antonio, Houston) can "meat" in the middle, deep in the heart of Texas and share emergent table conversations. Burnt Carni-Locavores Unite!

Was in Pasadena, CA for last years Rose Bowl game and was directed to Robin's Wood Fire BBQ in Pasadena. Could smell the smoke while turning into their lot. Sublime Baby Back Ribs, Rib Tips & huge meaty Beef Ribs were amongst the best I've ever had. What was really a suprize though were 2 sides served. The Wild Maine Blueberry cornbread was incredible, unlike any cornbread I've ever had. It had a crumble top that was sweet and buttery and was a perfect change from the norm. The Blue Cheese Pecan cole slaw also was unique in that it was crunchy, tart yet absolutely delicious. Best BBQ outside of Central Texas and Kansas City by far.
