word clouds for Biden and Palin

posted by Aziz Poonawalla

I manually extracted Biden’s and Palin’s remarks at the debate from the transcript and fed them into Wordle to create these word clouds. First, Senator Joe Biden:
biden
And then, Governor Sarah Palin:
palin
It seems the primary topic of the evening was John McCain, and to a lesser extent Barack Obama. That makes sense and fits perfectly into each veep candidate’s objectives for the evening – Palin to build McCain up, and Biden to tear him down.

American barbarism, civilization, and decadence (and Star Trek)
I came across a lengthy excerpt online from the book, "The Next Hundred Years: A Forecast for the 21st Century" by George Friedman and found it quite insightful. I say this as someone who probably is indeed an American barbarian by the definition of the passage; I do believe that there do exist u

If “Iraq” is in any of these it must be very small as I don’t see it. Probably the clearest sign yet of success.

Is the word “maverick” included in Palin’s wordcloud? If not, it should be. She used that word to describe McCain so many times that whoever had that word during a VP debate drinking game is dead.
Frankly, I am sick and tired of people using the word “maverick” to describe McCain when he has voted with Bush 90% of the time. Not only that, but he is now cozying up to the Religious Right leaders that he once decried as “agents of intolerance” back in 2000. His pick of Sarah Palin as VP completed his capitulation to this bloc he once rightfully denounced. The John McCain of 2000 may have earned the title of “maverick”, but the John McCain of 2008 has forsaken that title for that of “puppet of the Religious Right”.

you know, you’re right, it should be in the cloud, but I don’t see it. I am sure I manually extracted the right segments, and my raw text file has the word maverick in it a lot, but its not in the cloud. i wonder if wordle is filtering somehow…
