profiling “Jihad Jane”

posted by Aziz Poonawalla

Here in a nutshell is why ethnic profiling is so fundamentally flawed as a means of protecting against terrorism:

A petite, blond-haired, blue-eyed high school dropout who allegedly used the nickname JihadJane was identified Tuesday as an alleged terrorist intent on recruiting others to her cause, as federal prosecutors unsealed criminal charges that could send her to prison for life.

Colleen Renee LaRose, 46, has been quietly held in U.S. custody since October on suspicions that she provided material support to terrorists and traveled to Sweden to launch an attack, according to federal officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is continuing to unfold.

LaRose, who lived in suburban Philadelphia, allegedly recruited men and women in the United States, Europe and South Asia to “wage violent jihad,” according to an indictment issued in Pennsylvania. She fueled her interests on the Internet over the past few years and used Web sites such as YouTube to post increasingly agitated messages, the court papers said.

As an American citizen whose appearance and passport allowed her to blend into Western society, LaRose represents one of the worst fears of intelligence and FBI analysts focused on identifying terrorist threats. She is one of only a handful of women to be charged with terrorism offenses in the United States, national security experts said.

Across the ocean Tuesday, Irish police conducted morning raids in Cork and Waterford, arresting four men and three women who had been under electronic surveillance by U.S. and Swedish authorities. The seven were suspected of plotting with LaRose to attack a Swedish artist, Lars Vilks, whose 2007 drawing of the prophet Muhammad with the body of a dog enraged Muslims, according to Irish news accounts.

The path that LaRose aka JihadJane took to radicalization is still unclear, but the point is that she was well aware of her ethnic advantage, trying to help recruit people to her Swedish murder plot whose physical appearance would “blend in with many people” in Europe and the US. A bomb-toting grandma surely isn’t far behind.

With the rise in right-wing extremist violence at home and the certain existence of other white jihadis like JihadJane and Adam Gadahn, racial and ethnic profiling is clearly a lazy-man tactic that ends up making us less safe. What’s needed is better behavioral profiling – something we haven’t been paying enough attention to with the distraction of racial profiling, as the case of Abdulmutallab made embarassingly clear.

Unfortunately, advocates of racial profiling (such as Michelle Malkin) argue that it remains essential to our “survival”. I don’t think that Jihad Jane is going to change their mind, however, because on a certain level it’s not the threat of terrorism per se that they are really obsessed about. Certainly, principled conservatives can and have made a conservative case against racial profiling – which take the threat of terrorism much more seriously than the Islamophobic jafisphere does.

Like Samir, I too, am a Sufi, although I have years on him, and spent a long time researching genocide, perhaps an unexpected act for one who claims the type of faith I do. There is merit in what he says, but, I might ask, why was most of the accompanying article filled with the story of an avowed Zionist, who seems amazed that all Muslims do not hate Jews. Perhaps things should be balanced a bit. How many Jews hate Muslims, or, have totally false ideas about them. I spent the better part of two decades working for peace in the Middle East. For that, I have been black listed, basically in every field in which I have worked, or if allowed to keep a menial job, denied health care, and any other thing that merit might have allowed. I have been assaulted a number of times, but, justice is foreign to me. I accept that this is a world without justice, but, I truly wonder if not just the Zionists, but, many others of the Jewish faith see, how much hatred is building against them. In the name of Our Creator, I ask all to deeply examine themselves and to search for how hatred and avarice is affecting their lives. This applies to all, including myself, but, I say this with compassion to those of the Jewish faith, as in my travels, I find more and more hatred expressed towards them, and now I am not talking about fanatic so-called Muslims, but, from those of other faiths. As a wise man from a persecuted people in the Dakotas once said, “Come, sit, and let us put our minds together and see what life we can build for our children,” This I beg of all, for sadly I have Cassandra’s plague, ‘to see what is coming, to speak to deaf ears’. There is not much time left. Even the mighty shall fall, not before the wrath of God, for Allah, or, whatever name you chose, is not vengeful, that is something we have always brought upon ourselves. There is too much to be done, that requires that we work in peace. Too much imbalance in this world, and not merely among the humans. In the name of God, I ask, put down the trivial things, and find within yourselves, what path your Creator, not the god you make, has set you upon. Bless all of you.

As Salaamu Alaikum,
Luqmanslist.com is a new website that is geared towards Muslims. The goal
is to create a classifieds website that represents the Islamic community
in the tri-state area. Please aid in spreading the word to any Muslim who
owns a business or has any reason to post an advertisement. Through this
website we can make connections and support one another the way they do in
other religious communities, insha’ Allah! You may post ads for cars, real
estate, employment, and Islamic events. If a link to this website can be
placed on yours it would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Luqmanslist
