General David Petraeus, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, says a Florida church’s plan to burn copies of Muslims’ holy book could endanger American troops and Americans worldwide.
Dove World Outreach Center has gained attention for organizing “International Burn a Quran Day” to coincide with the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11.

Petraeus condemned its planned event following a protest by Afghans over the possible burning this week.
“I am very concerned by the potential repercussions of the possible (Quran) burning. Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday,” Petraeus said in an e-mail to the Associated Press. “Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult.”
Do you agree with Petraeus? Does this church’s proposed action represent growing hostility toward Muslims?
