Category: Finding Ways to Be FearlessFearless at Work: Finding the Silver Lining
In 2003, I ran for governor of California. During the televised debate, Arnold Schwarzenegger responded to one of my rebuttals by telling me to drink more decaf, a remark I cannot imagine him making that comment to a male candidate. When it was over, dozens of young women came forward to thank me for taking a stand and speaking my mind. It taught me a valuable lesson: as a culture, we’re still not comfortable accepting assertive women in positions of leadership. The experience reminded me why I’d run for office in the first place, and despite the bruising moments, I was glad I did.
Has there been a time in your life when a difficult situation highlighted your ambitions for you? Recount the experience and look more closely at it.

Dear Arianna, You might want to look at HUMILITY as being a very equal opportunity need. It is a spiritual axiom that when we are disturbed by someone, it is best to look at yourself and your part. I sense a little bit of oversensitiveness in your holding this resentment. How many other "offenses" do you replay? Put God in the equation. I understand you, but be vigilant!

Hello Arianna,
I want to say thanks for that story. It does help to hear that you are not the only one who goes through something. And I think it is great that you stood up for yourself. It is harder than some think to stand beside a man in the work place and be equal. Espacially when you work at a job like mine. I am the glue that holds this company together and still, I am treated like "the girl" and it is hard to stand up for myself. I am the only woman working here and because the boss treats me that way, so do the other men that work here. When I am assertive, they call it moody, or cranky. Any advice for me?
