Bible Q&A for September 4

What is meant by "Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother"? One religious leader says that we are to care for them as they get older, while another says that we just have to "honor" them by avoiding being judgmental and deferring to them.

Jesus teaches that "honor thy father and mother" does entail financial responsibility to them when there is such a need. This is very clear from the Korban passage found in Mark 7:9-13.

Honor
...to regard with great respect or esteem.

So how do you view someone who doesn't have a father, or a mother, or both?
I would guess most people would directly relate any problems this someone has as not having a father or a mother to teach them, and be there for them, and to supply the things they need.

Respect comes from learning from those who have experienced life and remember problems so you don't have to repeat them.

Respect comes from forgiving someone that has tried to do the best they can, and to be there for you, and help you, but maybe they have hurt you instead. Maybe they have been taught wrong.

So when your parents are aging and have no money because they have high medical costs, and no income for services or products, and home, are you discarding them when you don't help them out finacially or provide for their needs, or has the system failed?

So are your children ready to take care of you?
Who really is the mother and the father?

And so the system passes the buck......................

Jesus said, "Give freely, without expecting something in return."
(Pardon me for kicking over the tables of the money changers.)
I agree, give freely.
It's the people that are keeping track of the injury we can't trust.
They expect something in return.

,David

ps/
My mom and dad are both dead and I honor them by telling you that I loved them, and still love them.
