Fearless in Parenting: The Guilt-Fear Conundrum

My daughter Isabella and I joke about another of my fears: that she'll actually get her driver's license. The real fear, of course, is not only for my daughter's safety, but for my efficacy as a parent. I'm convinced that when a baby is born, guilt and fear replaces it in a mother's womb: have we taught our children enough to keep them safe when they're out in the world? Of course, I want Isabella to have the freedom that driving allows; I just want to know that she'll make the right decisions and be careful.

Do you struggle with this kind of guilt and fear? Are there ways to replace this guilt and fear with unconditional love, both for yourself and children you are close to?

I believe preparation is worth a pound of cure. Both my children received private driving lessons. One on one with an instructor is more intense then a car full of teens and a teacher who is certified to teach driving. Why not go the extra step with a driving school. It is money well spent, I believe. When you put over a thousand pounds of steel in the hands of a sixteen year old, one must remind them constantly to abide by the speed limit, look both ways and turn off the radio and pay attention to the other drivers and the road. Small price to pay for concentration and safety.

I do believe if you take steps to make it a safe atmosphere within the car and let them drive with you as a passenger occassionaly, you can see how they're progressing with regard to their driving habits and behavior toward other drivers. Call it a progress report if you will. The drivers license is a privledge and should be deserved. I may sound like a worrier, but I did believe going the extra step helped me cope with their new freedom and exposure to danger. I also do not believe new drivers should have unlimited access until they have a couple years of driving experience in all forms of traffic.

Alright here is one for you. My daughter, last one of six does not drive yet. She always feared it and I didn't push it because of my own fears. I worry about everything is these times. I am actually fearful of her getting in a car with an instructor from a driving school ALONE!
