The surroundings, in both cases. I grew up in a suburban housing tract. The sameness seemed flat and soulless to me, even as a young child. Something about it felt like life was happening somewhere else, not where I was, so I always longed for that undefined place. But we children also found pockets of places - a vacant lot, a grove of trees in someone's side yard, the horse farm a half-mile away - where it still felt like magic. I hope we can find a magical, wild place where our children can feel in tune with the cycles of nature.
