Wednesday is Question and Answer Day on the blog…a time for exploring many of the questions that people have recently asked about the nine Conversations with God books and the New Spirituality. Here’s this week’s entry…
Topic: Law of Opposites
Question asked by: Brett
Question: I’m stuck here and I don’t understand in my mind how these two very important laws work together when it seems that they are indeed opposites.
In Bringers of the Light you explain Principle #4, which I agree with and can see developing in my life very clearly. What I don’t understand is how that works in conjunction with the Law of Attraction.
Let me give you a example, I have chosen to be several things in my life, one of those is love. I will be love wherever I go and I will display love in what ever I do. Those around me will feel love when they are around me. So naturally (or super naturally) every type of non-loving attitude has shown up on schedule.
Yes, it has been very bad at times. But the Law of Attraction says that what I think about expands and it is drawn to you, so I would think that love and those with loving attitudes would be drawn to me. How are these two opposing realities reconciled?
Neale’s Response: I have received so many questions about this exact topic that I have produced an entire chapter about it in my new book, HAPPIER THAN GOD, scheduled for release next month.
In brief, the Law of Opposites creates a context within which that which you seek to experience may be made manifest in physical reality. For example, you cannot experience yourself as “the light” in the absence of darkness. Therefore, you will actually call in the darkness in order to experience a yourself as The Light.
Do not be discouraged when the Law of Opposites plays its effect in the process of personal creation. It is natural and to be expected. Remember that what you resist persists. Simply embrace what is going on as the out picturing of perfection itself. It is as Byron Katie writes in her wonderful book, Loving what is. Peace fills your heart when you simply love what is going on right now.
There is more to be said on this subject, and I invite you to be on the lookout for my new book.

How cool! Ask and It is Given. Voila!
I just started reading Bringers of the Light last night and had the same question. I don’t want to add to any confusion by saying that I too was…, Well, page 2 got me with, “As soon as you decide Who and What You Are, everything unlike it will come into the space” because at first glance it does seem counterintuitive to the law of attraction. Let’s just say that the struggle to reconcile in the mind the law of opposites with the law of attraction is one great opportunity to become clearer about both.
Am I getting this right?– There is the Is and the Is Not. In the act of defining my Isness, who and what I am, “everything unlike” my Isness will “come into the space” because I cannot experience my Isness in the absence of that which I am not (in CWG), my Is Notness.
The trick is as Neale describes, on page 58 in Bringers of the Light,
not to fall into the illusion that this “Is Notness” is who we really are now or who we are becoming in the act of defining ourselves to be. He writes,
Whatever you choose to be its opposite number will appear (or it
will become apparent that it was always there! Then as you heal
this illusion that this “opposite” is who you are, and move with
determined focus into continued and ever larger expression of
Who You Really Are, that which opposed you no longer has any
effect; you have rendered it null and void.
The more the not me shows up the more determined I am and the greater clarity I have in knowing the real me.
The implications of this fact seem enormous. I mean of the fact that in the act of self defining we are not only calling forth more of what we are not into the space but also more of what we are into the space.
Does this mean then that since God is the alpha, the omega, the beginning, the end, all that Is and Is Not, that what we are essentially experiencing as we grow in clarity and awareness of self, when all that Isness and Is Notness shows up even more, is the actuality of God’s presence in our relative reality?
I love this little book.

Hi Walter (aka Basho!),
Thanks for the link. Sir Ken Robinson is hilarious in getting the important message that the public education system kills creativity in children. He talks about how all over the world the education system is structured the same–a hierarchy favoring math/science at top and art, music at bottom.
Here is just one of many jokes for you that Sir Ken tells. There was a little six year old girl who was busy in the back of the room drawing wildly, vibrantly coloring a picture. The teacher walked up to her and said, “Oh, what is this a picture of?” The little girl said, “God.” The teacher said, “Well, now, noone really knows what God looks like.” The little girl smiled and continued on with her drawing, “Well they will in a minute.”
I second Walter’s recommendation.

Hmmmm….maybe I sould choose to experience myself as Darkness in order to surround myself with more light, eh??

I don’t see how relativity equates to polarity or complementarity. I’m looking at a door in my room right now. What is its “opposite”?

A Wall.

Sorry, but that made no sense. And of course, that was just one example. I’m also seeing a computer, a cell phone, a television, etc.

It’s handy to start by considering things as Opposites or as Not what I wanted, but there are no opposites or anything that is Not want I wanted.
We are God and God is Everything. We are the door and the wall. We are the adbundant and the lacking. All we are doing in choosing to experience one rather than the other.
If we choose to experience ourselves as Love, the question should be “How much Love”. The opposite to Love can’t turn up, because there isn’t an opposite. What turns up is a relatively lower Love energy in order that you can experience yourself relatively abundant in Love.
A bird sitting on a power-line doesn’t feel the 50,000 volts because it isn’t touching the other 0 volt cable, or the ground.
You have to reach out and embrace the lower in order to experience yourself as the higher (not the opposite).

What is essence of “doorness” but a passage through? What is essence of “wallness” but a barrier to? I think it makes perfect sense that wall and door are opposites. As far as “computer”, “cell phone,” and “television” go, don’t we experience their “oppositeness” when we simply turn them off?
John, thank you for your comments they are very insightful.

I would say that the opposite of a door is the opening that a door fills just as the opposite of “closed” is “open”.

In general I think of opposites or duality as refering to qualities and not so much objects. Ligth and dark, good and bad, happy and sad, etc. If pressed, though, I would say that the opposites of objects are their absence…so the opposite of a camera is no-camera……or we could say that the opposite of an object is its surroundings, which being anything but a camera, allows us to perceive the camera.

That would be a good start imo because the wall comment still doesn’t make sense to me from a strictly physical aspect. A window is on a wall in a room too. One can’t have more that one thing opposite it. That said, while I can agree that there are opposite (exoterically or esoterically) I don’t see them as being mutually dependent.

You won’t have action without reaction. Balance is something that some don’t consider or what is important enough to put it on a list. The book will open someone’s mind to what was not considered. Who will stop and think about the words that are used? There is also wisdom and common sense. Who is able to use it? Understanding and knowing. There is nothing in between.
I understand human nature and it doesn’t have to be complicated. One is to be busy doing something. Just when I was trying to cross the street, I end up watching the traffic go by.
While I can write about people without the names, you can write about the law of opposites. Great! I look forward to seeing it when it is published.

Dear Esperitus85,
I see now that we were approaching the idea of opposites from different angles; you were thinking more in terms of literal physical objects and I was thinking more of the idea of a thing or as Ned phrased it “qualities.” I appologize if my wall comment only made things more confusing rather than less.
Have a great evening,
Love and Peace,

You think that the opposite of dark is light and good is bad and tall is short and love is hate.
You are mistaken.
How dark does a room have to be before there is no light, there is always light.
How tall does something have to be before it is not shorter than something else.
Good and Bad or relative measures of the same energy, it depends what you are used to experiencing – one mans food is another mans poison.
Short and tall are relative measures of the same energy – height.
Love is an energy that we can choose to experience. How much of it we experience is a function of our ability to remember that there is still more available at a higher intensity. Our task might be to expand our conscious awareness to embrace a wider range of the Love scale while also moving our position in a positive direction along the scale. This leads us to experience greater Love in All situations, including those that might at first appear to be “bad” or “negative”.
Give Your Love to those that have less than you and you will experiencec your abundance.
