It's great to have our spiritual beliefs inform our politics, but what if those spiritual beliefs are ancient understandings that cannot possibly be applied to our modern world? How do the rules of Yesterday's God apply to humanity today?

NOTE: Saturday is Prose & Poetry Day here on the blog, a time to take a moment once a week to relax the mind, open the heart, and access the soul through the gift of prose from one of the many books of The New Spirituality, and through the poetry of Em Claire, author of the forthcoming volume, Silent Sacred Holy Deeply: Heart.
For this week's prose we offer...a continuing excerpt (see last Saturday's blog) from Tomorrow's God about politics...

So, you’re saying that our present cultural values and sacred beliefs are infecting, rather than enhancing, our political system.
Yes. Not only in the United States but around the world, your politics have been adversely affected by your spiritual beliefs. Why is this happening? And how is bringing more spirituality into politics going to help?
It’s happening because your beliefs are based on your understanding of Yesterday’s God. They make up the Old Spirituality, which is a spirituality of separation and superiority, vengeance and violence. In the days of Tomorrow's God all of this will change. Bringing the New Spirituality into politics is what will help.
Well, it doesn’t really matter much in America, because we keep this spiritual stuff pretty much out of politics. I know, I know, you said that we don’t, but I have to disagree with you. This is not Saudi Arabia or Iran, where our spiritual beliefs are practically law.
If you think that in the United States your cultural values and most sacred beliefs are not being reflected in your political system, you are either lying to yourself or you are blind.Well, of course our politics reflect our cultural values and our beliefs! That’s what politics are supposed to do. But we keep religion and politics separate in this country.
You mean “religions” in your country do not have anything to do with your cultural values and your most sacred beliefs?Of course they do.
Well, then, you’ve just contradicted yourself. If you’ve really kept religion out of politics in the United States, then your politics do not reflect your cultural values and sacred beliefs. On the other hand, if your politics do reflect your cultural values and most sacred beliefs, then you have not keep religion out of politics.
You can’t have it both ways.
Wait a minute. When I say “cultural values” I am not talking about theological constructs dealing with God and the nature of Ultimate Reality and the Path to Salvation, or whatever. That’s the purview of “religion.” And when I talk about our most “sacred beliefs,” I am not talking about belief in heaven and hell, or the power of prayer, or the sanctity of marriage, or any of those things.
That, too, is the purview of religion. I am talking about cultural values, not religious values. American values, not Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, or Hindu values. I am talking about national beliefs, not religious beliefs. Do you see the difference?
Give me an “American” value.Okay. Liberty. Liberty and Freedom are American values.
I have told you in this dialogue that the word “freedom” and the word “God” are interchangeable.
Well, yes, you have. But no major religion teaches that.
Do not your major religions teach that God is all powerful, all creative, all knowing, unlimited and everywhere present?
Yes, I believe they do.
And are these not the characteristics of one who is the essence of freedom itself?I never thought about it that way.
Well, isn’t someone who is all powerful, all creative, all knowing, unlimited and everywhere present, essentially totally free?
Yes, I suppose so.
Would not such a person be free to do whatever he or she wants, when he or she wants, where he or she wants, and have complete liberty to do so how he or she wants, and why he or she wants?Yes, I would have to agree.
And isn’t that, basically, your definition of God?
Yes, it is.
Then the way you have defined God is the way you wish to define yourselves. And in the future, you will simply admit that, rather than trying to hide it.In the days of The New Spirituality the idea of using politics to define yourselves as you have defined God will be widely accepted.

This week's gift of poetry

While You were out,
many things transpired.
A sky was born.
Love & Laughter married.
Ten Thousand suns were birthed.
I awoke, a Butterfly.
My wings burst into song.
And I even changed my name,
While You were out.
Planets began to dance, my Love,
And all colors traded hues.
Stars turned themselves into ocean bottoms;
Grasshoppers, into Gazelles,
And I left the earth
and returned
Courageous
All, while You were out.

In a spiritual view we are all one, one organism, one spirit and at the same time billions reflexes of god. On the other hand we have to realise that just like in the humanbody all our parts have different abilities, appearence and places, but we need all of them. At the same time a nation and the whole world (atleast in our current state of development) needs leadership and hierarchi combined with as much personal freedom as possible ofcourse. My best suggestion is directdemocracy like they have Schweiz, were as many people as possible participate in as many questions as possible. We need freedom to evolve, but we also need structures to chanalize the will of our organism so we can evolve according to the will of many. All this questions is easier to be understood if we understand two basic concepts that also Neale and god is teaching, 1.we are all one. 2. we cant separate spirituality from anything (and we shouldnt try for our own good according to me). I dont agree with Neales political suggestions or with his idolizing of Obama (if he were consistent he should vote for a thirdparty candidate like Ralph Nader that would help democracy alot), but otherwise in the spiritual questions i agree with him totally!

I agree Ernst. The material in CWG books is spot on. Either Neale needs to read his own (the material that came through him) material more or he has read it too much already and is so immersed in it that he's now seeing things in Obama that are really only in himself.
I asked him several days ago if he thought that anyone running on the platform presented in Book 3 starting on page 292 and going through to the Guiding Principles of a HEB society could get elected president in the United States right now and either he didn't read it or choose not to respond because then he might have to admit that Obama just doesn't represent the kind of change that is true change according to his own book and is really just business as usual in just a somewhat darker form. And Hilary is the same in just a different gender. And McCain is the same in just an older form.

Larry: Good to see that is not only me questioning the motives for Neales endorsement for Obama, if Obama atleast had some interesting or really groundbreaking suggestions in subjects like spirituality or environment it would be one thing, if its only about stopping the war in Iraq then he should vote for either Ralph Nader or Ron Paul that wish to stop the war now, and that also wish to stop giving weapons to both Israel and the Muslims. I really hope Neale would answer about this but i think he is to busy to endorse Obama (propably because he is black) then to question his own choices!
I don't see why the ancient texts are unsuited to a modern world. Maybe the modern world's in error. The ancient texts come from God, or so some think. God is not a definition, any more than you or I are definitions. The world isn't made of sentences. If God is real, God's commandments are timeless. That people hold different views on God doesn't make God any different from you or me or Kaiser Wilhelm. There are true opinions and false ones and opinions that fall in between.
I agree that religion cannot be kept out of politics. Why should the most profound truth about the universe have no bearing on how we go about coercing each other, which is all that politics is about. Why is coercing people as Bill Clinton wishes nobler than coercing people as God wishes (if indeed God wishes coercion.) I don't see God as mere freedom. God is held to have many attributes, such as perfect knowledge and perfect goodness, and the power to juggle planets. A person who aspired to these powers would be unusual indeed. It's certainly not part of our national ideal that everyone have the powers attributed to God.
Well, to give you both a Judeo-Christian approach (and that is where all Christianity began - no matter the religious approach), God is Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Omniscient. Omni means all, so God is all power, all intelligence and everywhere equally present. The universe is God's body. The greatest law is love - which expresses in the universe as oneness, magnetism, attraction. The first law of the universe is order, which means God first, and everything else expressing in differing levels of manifestation, as created. When we fail to operate in order - every individual, who is an individualized expression of God, operating only to the extent of what he/she wants, we then violate universal principles, and the effect of the cause is the outworking of the Law to maintain that order, and we then experience the outworking of the Law (for that violation). The problem is, we have gotten out of order with the orderly universe, and that is what has been happening to us. God is not a person, but Spirit. The true selves of us is spirit, with the personna (Green for the mask) that covers and hides our true identity. (Genesis 1:26).
We do not know who God is, therefore, we do not know what our true identity is. The Law of Mind-Action creates our experiences, our
health, our enviroment and our purse (finances). Therefore, be careful what you put the I Am with, because it becomes your God (ruling all areas of your life). (I Am is synonomous with Christ).
We have violted God's attribute of Love so badly, that is why we have experienced the world situations that we have with the weather, war, hunger, etc..., and will continue to do so until humankind awakens to his true identity.
