Does God exist?

Sunday August 10, 2008

Back in the Sixties posters, billboards, and bumper stickers began appearing asking the question, Is God dead? This question presumed that there was a God who was at some point alive.

The reason the question was asked is that there seemed to be little evidence of God in the world. Today there seems to be even less. At least, by some standards.

The world today stands at the brink of its own self-destruction--ecologically, economically, politically, militarily, socially, and finally (or perhaps initially), spiritually.

As civilization's many systems continue breaking down, every person who believes in God has to ask, Why would God allow such a total disintegration of all He has created?

This question produces no answer that makes sense--and so the question leads to a larger question: Could we have been wrong about God all along? Could we have been wrong to think that there ever even WAS a God?

The genesis of this thinking lies in the ideas that we have about God in the first place. Our Cultural Story about God revolves around three major ideas:

1. God is the Creator (In other words, He made us, and everything that is.)
2. God loves His Creations and has an investment in their outcomes (In other words, He wants the best for us.)
3. God can and will use His power to protect and defend His Creations. (In other words, we can call upon God for help with our lives and He will not let us down.)

This is a wonderful mythology about a Divine Being, but the World As It Is sorely strains its credulity. In order to retain its credulity, many human beings have added a fourth precept to humanity's Cultural Story about its Deity:

4. God's Kingdom is not on the Earth, but in Heaven. (In other words, the Earth and all physical life is not especially protected, and God could, in fact, choose to destroy the Earth--or allow the Earth to destroy itself--if that's what it takes to implement God's Larger Plan. There is no guarantee of our physical survival as a species.

This has led to an even further extension of the God Story to include a final idea:

5. God does, in fact, intend for life as we know it to be destroyed as part of the process by which God asserts Himself in our world; the moments when this happens shall be called The End Times--and this end to everything IS what is guaranteed.

It is not clear when these End Times will come (they have been variously predicted for centuries and millennia). By adding this Uncertainty Principle to the God Story, humanity can explain the Always Present degradation of life as we know it, the constant and never-ending struggles that individuals experience as they move through their days and nights, and the seemingly inexorable movement toward ultimate self-annihilation.

Thus, we can have it all: a Life that is difficult and challenging at best, and that is leading, in any event, to its own destruction, and a God who promises us not to worry, that all things will be just fine for those who believe in Him and come to Him (in a certain and particular way).

So we have largely, as a species, set aside the question of whether a God exists (surveys show that the vast majority of people in virtually every culture believe in a Power Greater than themselves, called, variously, God, Allah, Jehovah, Brahmin, Yahweh, Lord, Krishna, and whatever else it pleases humans to refer to It by). We have focused, instead, on why God exists, on what God wants, and on how we can give it to Him in order that we might garner that not-on-earth reward which will cause our unrewarding earthly life to make sense--or at least render it bearable.

Yet while the majority of humans on the Earth believe in some sort of God, not everyone does. And many say they simply do not know one way or the other. And so we have atheists and agnostics, as well as believers.

It is not sufficient to be a Believer, however. One must be the right kind of Believer. If one is the wrong kind of Believer one is going to miss out on the not-on-earth reward anyway.

No, it is worse than that. If one is the wrong kind of Believer, one will be punished. Not only will one miss out on the after-life reward, one will be required to endure everlasting, unremitting, and indescribable torture, anguish, and suffering.

This, in admittedly simple terms, is humanity's Cultural Story about God.

Now along comes Conversations with God to upset the apple cart, to undo all of this and to offer humanity a new Cultural Story about the Power That Is.

This New Story about God turns out to be the oldest story there is, and is imbedded deep within the cellular memory of humankind--which is why millions upon millions of people, when they hear the story, immediately agree with it, often saying things like, "Of course." Or, "I knew this all along." Or, "This is exactly the way I always thought it was." Or, "Finally, someone has said it the way I experience it." Or, simply, "What's new?"

The New Story tells us that there is a "God", or, if you please, a Power Greater than us, but that we have not understood It completely, not grasped Its totality, not understood its Nature or its Purpose or its Function--and that we have incorrectly assessed what It wants.

A number of years ago I appeared on the Today show on NBC, and I was asked by Matt Lauer, "You claim to have spoken with God. Fair enough. What, then, in a quick paragraph, because we have about 30 seconds left, is God's message to the world?"

I told Matt that I could give it to him in five words. "Great," he said. "What is it?"

"You've got me all wrong."

There is a God, I can assure you. In this, most of humanity has it right. I think we understand intuitively that this must be so. Or maybe we just want to believe in a Power Greater. Either way, we have it right. God exists. And the existence of God becomes virtually undeniable (and imminently more useful) the moment we change our minds about Who God Is and What God Wants.

The most important theological issue of our time is not whether people believe IN God, but what they believe ABOUT God. More on this next Sunday, as Sunday School All Week continues.

Dear Readers,

There is a God, an Awesome, Loving God who cares for us one on one, each of us. The fire and brimstone needed to stop being preached, the Love of God is now being preached. Amen. So many think as I did at one time that unless you are clean and perfect don't go to church or you will be a hypocrit. All the opposite, in order for us to be changed and become more whole we need to develope a relationship with Christ, that is the only way to ultimatley develope into a better person of love. It is hard in this world everyday to maintain peace, patience, joy and love with everything going on and temptation surrounding us daily. I use to be homless, by my own choice. I strayed away from my foundational upbringing in a Christian background and chose my own route with out God's devine leading, what a mess I made. One day, feeling like the Lord had washed his hands of me I needed an answer to a question to a situation I had been going through in a relationship for many years. I went into my room and told Him I need to know from Him what is wrong and lone behold I opened the Bible and there was my answer on the top right hand side of the page. I wasn't putting him first (in a nutshell). Wow, I thought, the Lord hasn't forgotten me, He is still with me, He still cares for me!! From that point forward, no I was not perfected as many may think overnight by salvation. I am not perfect in my own eyes nor will I ever be, this is a continuous walk daily to be changed from one glory to the next. But at that moment I knew God was looking over me, especially being homless for 7 years and walking the streets as a female, never being harmed or hurt. From then until now, about 15 yrs has passed and still I struggle with issues that I either have not left up to God or I have yet to be molded by Him in die season. It is progression for some, not overnight. I can not imagine to tell all of you how many wonderful things the Lord has done and some of my desires not even prayed about or asked for but just in my heart has he given me. The greatest thing is knowing that you do not deserve it but He loves you that much anyway and to let you know He is still watching, loving and caring for you everyday whether He is acknowledged daily or not.

I encourage anyone trying to belive in Him to just give it a shot, what is the harm? Bad things will always happen, it is promised will we indure trials and tribulations but we come out more than conquerers, maybe not over the phsyical situation but more over with His help out spiritual and emotional side will perhaps be less affected by life knowing we have a Lord in Heaven, watching looking and longing to be your comfort in the midst of all. He CAN AND DOES comfort and provide rest and peace. I had a friend overdose at my home without my knowledge of what he was doing. All night he laid in the bed making these horrible sounds like a bear snoring. I didn't know what was going on so the next morning I awaoke to wake my friend and if it wasn't for him lying on his face all night, instead of on his back (which would have killed him after 8 hours of breathing in vomit) he would have surley died. I believe the Angels of the Lord were watching over him! Later that day after and ambulance had been called, he was so blue in the face, the Dr's had said they are not sure if he will make it through due to the infections that set in his lungs from lying there. I went to a church and prayed, (I pray anywhere) but I wanted to remain focused. No one was in the chapel, I was alone me and the Lord, praying, pleading crying to him and then........ it stoppped. My tears dried up, this heaviness was gone, and I said well Lord either he has passed or you are telling me it is ok. This peace I had never had before, sound peace came over me. Later I came to find out that my friend did indeed make it through and is still alive.

The Bible says some people will not be spiritual minded and will not comprehend Him. But I beg of you, what harm is it? That God might let you down? Heck, people all over let each other down. God in ones eyes may let you down in one thing perhaps yes, but He can lift you up with many other things in his Love.

religion today is taking a very hard hit ,years ago you would say to some one i am a christian and they would say well bless you, today we are so far apart, because every church has defined the book on how they live there life, like home schoolers they do not even want to say hi to anyone that is not in that group ,which is ,if your not saved you go to hell, now i am saved but i talk to all people and do not care what there belief is ,god will have the last word, all these different christian groups are against each other leaving christians divided its about time we come together like we did years ago ,the bible is the bible and it means what it says and changing it for your benfit will never legitimize your cause, stop reading in between the lines ,a true man of god is billy graham he lives and speaks nothing but the truth about the bible ,we need more leaders like him and the gread among these idiots that call there selves men of god ,is a disgrace to all christians they will be dealt with in the end.we need to come together now with so many problems in the world say hi. to your neighbor help a person that needs help tell your kids you love them each time they walk out the door call your relatives that you do not agree with and reconcile with them and others that you might have hurt before god bless everyone, god is positive energy and he loves all jofrommo .

Q: Does God exist?
And how! In so many forms and with such varied characteristics - all depending on which words are being used to define God. So varied even among sects of any given religion.
The thought comes to mind that God exists in the spaces between words. Did some person already publish that somewhere and I am just remembering it?
When I reach beyond myself, either intentionally (worship, meditation, prayer) or in response to feeling overwhelmed by an experience (unwanted or coveted), that is where I encounter what I personally term God.

Q: Why would God allow such a total disintegration of all He has created?
It is the nature of life in our shared realm, that things are born, live, die and decay and so feed the new life which will die and ultimately decay... in a seemingly endless cycle. Does God have anything to do with this, except perhaps in the original creation of the whole process? If so, I have to fall back on my early teaching and assume that God chooses to be limited by whatever laws of spirit or physics were laid out at the inception

Q: Could we have been wrong about God all along?
Oh most assuredly! At any given moment, about any given 'certainty'. I'm pretty sure that though we enjoy and perhaps grow from discussions of the who, what, why, when of God, the complexity and expansiveness of a deity defies the human capacity.
What I hope for in my studies and meditations is a moment of clarity, a tiny truth I can take away with me back into the world at large to be tested and practiced and pondered until it becomes a part of who I am or is rejected as a misunderstanding.

Q: Could we have been wrong to think that there ever even WAS a God?
Now I could be wrong *grin*, but if this query is asking about the existence of an embodied super-being alive in some realm beyond our perception, today I don't believe there ever was a God. If it refers to some indescribable, undefinable source of all that is, was and will be (including the 'horrid' bits), I can find no basis for denial.
