Must we believe in Jesus to get to heaven? Does our life on earth as we have lived it count for nothing? Why is 'salvation' even required? The Theology Class at this blog continues today...
I am very sorry that after my entry here on Tuesday I did not receive an answer from Kristine, who posted such a marvelous entry here earlier. I thought that the questions I asked were meaningful and important, and I was really hoping that she might shed some light on them from her point of view.
In case you missed Tuesday's class (this blog is Sunday School All Week!), let me reprint the questions here...
You have given us ample testimony to the truth as you know it, Kristine (and thank you for that, again), but I am wondering now if you might help us with an understanding of the reason for all this. Why has God set it up this way? That is, why does what we actually do in life have nothing to do with our salvation, and why is it that only the way in which we believe, the person in whom we believe, can guarantee us Paradise, and that if we believe in the 'wrong' person or path, we are 'choosing' hell? And these few further questions, Kristine...
Why is 'salvation' required in the first place? What have we as a species of sentient beings done that is so bad that God condemns each of us, in a sense, before we are born, leaving it to us to seek 'salvation' from this condemnation?
While we are waiting hopefully for a reply from Kristine (or any other firmly believing Christian who may be able to help us with a response), I'll go to this entry from a person posting as "Nin"...
Do you really think that your judgment before God is going to come down to a scenario like this? Here's God speaking: "Uh, I see all these wonderful things that you did in your life. You were good here and here, not so good here and here. All in all, I could let you into Heaven with me if only right here, if you would've done this one more good thing of helping this old lady across the street- you would've made it. I'm so sorry, but off to Hell you go. You just missed. Bye, Bye."Kind of nonsensical, isn't it... That's why achieving eternal salvation and eternal life with God is not based upon doing "good works". How good is "good" is a silly way to base salvation upon. And if achieving eternal life with God after death can be achieved by being "good," then Jesus was the biggest fool in history, because he went to a horrible death on the cross for nothing.
"The truth shall set you free", and there is no freedom in basing salvation upon doing "good works."
I agree, Nin. Yet I am still wondering, is "salvation" required at all? What makes "salvation" necessary? What are we being saved from? And why? How have we gotten into a position where "salvation" is necessary. And please don't say, "By being sinners," because little babies are not "sinners," and yet certain Christians teach that even tiny little babies cannot get to heaven unless they are baptized and by this means, through their surrogates, accept Christ.
i agree with you, Nin, that trying to "figure out" WHICH "good deeds" are "good" and which are only mediocre is silly. And, are good deeds "good" if they are motivated by greed, or the chance to gain notoriety or honor? Does motivation have anything to do with it?
I liked the response of Susan to Nin's entry. Said she...
Nin,
You wrote: Do you really think that your judgment before God is going to come down to a scenario like this? Here's God speaking. "Uh, I see all these wonderful things that you did in your life. I think a scenario which is equally nonsensical is the one in which God would say, "I see all these wonderful things you did in your life, and I have to admit that you were just as good if not better than some Christians and you even helped the old lady across the street... but gee you didn't say the magic word "Jesus," so sorry, off to hell you go."
Yes, Susan, I, too, find this a bit implausible. I can't for the life of me get someone to give us an answer as to WHY we have to believe in Jesus to avoid going to hell, other than that "Jesus said so."
Later in the exchange Nin wrote...
If we could reach heaven based upon what we do here on earth in this life. then Jesus was a huge fool for going to the cross because he thought that his death was to redeem our sinful nature.
What sinful nature, Nin? What sinful nature does a 6-year-old have? Or, for that matter, even a 99-year-old? Gosh, my grandma was the nicest person you'd ever want to meet. What sinful nature are we talking about? And please don't fall back on that old saw, "Everyone has committed sin. No one can claim perfection in the eyes of the Lord..."
Who was it that said that "perfection" (whatever that is) is required by the Lord? Are you seriously saying that unless a person behaves perfectly (by some measure to which we are not even privvy) in every single solitary second of their life, that they are subject to judgment, condemnation, and everlasting suffering in the scorching fires of hell -- unless they are "saved" by their belief in Jesus? Is this the theology the world is asked (or should I say, "required") to accept? Is this the God that the world is invited to believe in? A God who would judge, condemn, and punish a little old lady who dies at 99 after a lifetime of goodness and kindness and gentleness, who just happened to be Jewish?
Let me put this to you simply...W H Y W O U L D G O D N E E D T O A C T L I K E T H I S?
Class?
(Are there any Christians in this class? Kristine? Anybody...?)

Reference below NEal, maybe thsi will help you some. There are mysterys far beyond us nad well describede withint the greatest book of all time. You may remember that people even back then seeing JEsus and what he did, said etc. would not believe. They wouldnt today either. Its no different. We are a sinful bunch and not many of us would want our life of the past week(everything thought and done) up on the flatscreen for friends and family to watch. We need to be saved because when the devil left out of heaven, committed to detroying men, the world and our connection to God which we happiliy accepted and continue to accept becuase we have this in our nature( ever spend too much money, eat tooo much, have sex with the wrong person, etc?) as well as the ability to do good with the help of God in the most extreme times. Faith ( to belive alone, is not enough, there must be actions that followo just as thoughts and beliefs translate to action everyday. TO proclaim I belive in JEsus, and your heart is not for real, which HE will know, will lead to many having perfomed much and His telling them, Leave me, I know you not. God is not playing around and he watns to know who is REALLY on the team. Just like down here. Why do you think we exert the greatest demands on people to make special teams, work certain jobs, etc??? and we're only humans. WHat do you think the Lord of the Universe wants? well, first, e lvoed us enough to say I want you, and I m sending my Son down to get you out. THen they spit on him and killed him (and do today...read the vineyard story) You see God loves you and us, and died for us while we were still sinners, sending His son, HIs spirit within, to do this. Down here we consider this the most heroic, noble and selfless act, that is to give your life so that anouther may live. Well HE did it for all of us, everyone. Bur we have to acknowledge that we need it first, because yoiu dont get saved from drowning unless you know you are drowining and by trying to swim out of 10 ft seas on your own or be reading a 10 step book guide on doing so...you yell out, oh God please help my I am drowning. When we are desperate we will come. And this is what the Lord wants. Not word games, and funny little puszzles. This is life and death. PLease see website digginfortruth.tripod.com if you want to know more. May you get to know this Jesus Christ, the only one who claimed I am God, and put his money where HIs mouth was,

Okay, I admit being incredibly "late" to class (today is August 23) you'll probably see less than completely "thought out" responses from me... repeatedly:
So anyway, maybe the need for salvation got created because we need to forgive ourselves? If I'm all consumed with guilt, it seems to take up so much of my creative energy, that there isn't enough to go about my affirming, nurturing, loving tasks.
that kind of guilt is sponsored by Satan and that is exactly where he wants you, face down in the dirt, immobile. That is not healthy guilt, like oh___, i really did wrong there, i need to make ammends or ask forgivenes and then it is let go. BIG huge difference.
We are guilty of much, daily, things we do and say, some we arent even aware of, and it can build up in us like sediment in an engine before the oil is changed for fresh clean new stuff. BUt, get this, GOd is not saying, you are filty rotten dirty people, HE is saying I love you, you are screwing up again BUT I sent my SOn to take care of business and HE did. You are forever mine becasue you accept me and see that you need me. Many down here have been made to feel like crap thru terrible parents, spouses, others who have hurt them. They dont need to hear more about how bad they are. Thats not it. That kind of hurting is sent directly from the enemy to destroy, immobilize and humiliate just like he uses human agents to do the same. We are talin gabout guilt as in recognition of I did wrong, messed up, missed the target and since we are all in training, we want to do better the next time and not be dragged down underneath the water with grotesque and abnormal feelings of failure, unworhithness, etc. ALL inspired by Satan the originator of the LIE and ACCUSATION....always.
This is what the freedom in Christ/God IS all about. We get taken care of, cleaned, helped, when we need it. We also get hard traing that soemtimes is not fun and that we would never choose to do ourselves, BUT that is what coaches are for, right?
take care! best wishses
oh and yes, definitely forgive yourslef, but want to really feel better? (event though is hurts at firts) aske GOd, show me, bring to my mind what I have not been doing good at, where i have hurt another, been selfish, etc.) HE will, and THEN ask his forgiveness and if you can,, ask their forgivenss. THIS is not easy at all, and is far from the do what feels good yak yak of Walsh and others, because epeopl dont want to SEE their sin/mistakes like that.
Salvation pretty much means freedom. When we believe and follow Christ and his teachings, it brings us in fellowships/relationship with God; therefore, we realize that the ways of the Father are good and perfect, and will follow his way.
