It’s the Fourth of July here in the U.S., but to me the holiday is just as much about personal freedom as it is about the freedom of our country.
My mind always wanders when I’m looking up at the fireworks. My gaze goes back and forth between the bright bursts of color in the night sky and back down to the crowds of couples, families and friends all gathered to watch.
See, the Fourth is a great people-watching holiday, and it always gets me thinking about who I’m spending my own time with and whether or not I’m on the right path. I’ll see a couple kissing and wonder if I’m in the right relationship. Or I’ll see a big family cuddled up on a blanket together and wonder if I’m making the right choice in not having children.
Heavy, right? Well, that’s where the part where personal freedom comes in.
I do believe we all have the freedom to create the life we want — but sometimes you have to fight for it, and sometimes that takes courage. And sometimes you don’t even know what you want or where to begin.
This is why I love I Ching — it’s the ancient Chinese oracle with all the coin-tossing and the hexagrams, surely you’ve heard of it? If not, now’s the perfect time to check it out. You know, the Chinese invented fireworks, too — they must be onto something when it comes to illumination, both inside and out!
So how about we celebrate personal freedom on this Independence Day with a great big colorful burst of insight from the I Ching. That’s what’s I’m going to do! Happy Fourth of July!
