Happy Birthday Goofus & Gallant

Wednesday June 28, 2006

Highlights for Children is 60!

Go Timbertoes, it's your birfday! Actually, I can't stand those stuck-up Timbertoes. And since Ritalin came out, Goofus hasn't been as much fun as he used to be, has he?

I have great memories of Highlights magazine.

Here's to it's continued success as an uplifting, educational and fun experience for young readers!>

I still get nostalgic when I see Highlights in a doctor's or dentist's office. This was one of those few things my immigrant parents let me have without any question (along with Legos and Peter Pan Records, which I plan on sharing with my newborn son someday). Highlights was one of those simple, innocent joys of childhood in the 1970s and 1980s. Sure beats Xbox and the Cartoon Network.>

Several years ago MAD Magazine did a parody of "Goofus & Gallant". It was really funny, in that typical snarky MAD Magazine way, and brought back a lot of memories. My parents even subscribed to Highlights for awhile when my sister and I were little.

MAD has a current occasional feature called "Melvin & Jenkins", which is essentially a hipper, African-American take on "Goofus & Gallant".>

Does anyone know whether the Timbertoes started with Highlights, or whether the book came first? I have my mother's copy, so it's got to be about Highlights vintage... Some fond memories of childhood include reading Highlights.>
