Don't try this at home!

Wednesday August 2, 2006

You had better be sitting down before you read this. I don't know whether this woman was extremely courageous, extremely insane, or both. I just know that I've never heard of anything like it. I let Mrs. CC, who is six months pregnant, read it last night, and the account -- what's the technical term? -- um, freaked her cheese.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Apparently the mother involved is a former porn star, and that can cause problems like this one reported in a combox by a reader. I didn't click through the links, so I wasn't aware of this. So beware:

Rod, while I am glad to have read the story and was very moved by her situation, you might want to just warn people that clicking through some of the links will take you to her bio, which includes some photos that are not safe for work. I wasn't expecting that.

Now how do I clean this stuff off my work laptop so I don't get in trouble? Anyone?

Whoa! I had no idea. I'll put a disclaimer in the original post.>

I'm really appalled by the apparent lack of compassion for Asia in these comments as well as this post. When I was pregnant with my second daughter I kept up with her and her first pregnancy through the iVillage message boards. She had tried for a homebirth for her daughter, but ended up delivering at a hospital and yes, going home right away and posting pictures of her beautiful baby. So yes Virginia, you can deliver a baby at home (not for me, not for many people, but yes it is possible.)

I just read tonight that Asia's husband Don was killed in a car accident this summer and she is now a single mom to two children under the age of 2. She needs all the compassion, love, and positive thoughts and prayers she can get. Not hateful, judgmental hypocrites.>

I hope nobody thought I was being a judgmental hypocrite for suggesting the NSFW warning!

I considered unassisted childbirth very seriously with my own kids, and I still might do it someday if I find myself without a good midwife. In some states, attending homebirth is illegal, so unassisted is the only legal option to give birth at home.

When I was active on unassisted-childbirth email lists, I noticed that a large fraction of the women said they had a history of being sexually abused or exploited. It seems that the desire to keep birth "in the family" is a way for many women to avoid painful flashbacks and a sense of violation that sometimes accompanies the medical management of fertility/sexuality/birth.

My heart goes out to her --- losing your husband at such a time must be terrible. I pray she doesn't feel that she must go back to making porn, just to keep her kids clothed and fed.>

I had six of my nine kids at home. For three of them just my husband was there...and for one, I barely got him awake in time to reach out his arms and catch the baby.

Story is completely believable. Emotional roller coaster makes sense if her husband just got killed.
I could have posted pictures on the internet within an hour of several of my births, if I knew how to do so in the first place. I washed my birth sheets and made breakfast for 7 other kids within a few hours of the birth of number 8, when my husband unexpectedly had to go back to his workplace due to an emergency.

Great story.
