I heart Irshad Manji

Monday September 18, 2006

Did you see her commentary on the CBS Evening News tonight? You can. Here's part of what she had to say:As a faithful Muslim, I do not believe the pope should have apologized. I've read what’s been described as his...

Irshad Manji has been getting death threats for quite a while. Read "The Trouble With Islam Today," her wonderful 'open letter' to her fellow Muslims.

Originally titled "The Trouble with Islam," she changed the title out of sensitivity to those who said it wasn't the essence of Islam that was the problem, it was the current crisis between fundamentalist 'Arab' or Wahabi Islam and modernity.

To me, Irshad is like the Scarlet Pimpernel. (Do yourself a favor and rent the old movie version, which stars Leslie Howard, and then see if you agree.)

She pretends to be a clown -- making fun of herself and her spiky hair, while engaged in deadly serious and dangerous and heroic endeavors.

"They seek her here, they seek her there, those fanatics seek her everywhere. Is she in Heaven, is she in Hell, that damned elusive Pimpernel?">

Actually, in the original bit of doggerel, it was "those Frenchies seek him everywhere," so my contribution to bad poetry would sound better if I said:

"They seek her here, they seek her there, those Crunchies seek her everywhere. Is she in Heaven, is she in Hell, that damned elusive Pimpernel?"

Unfortunately, it's not the 'Crunchies' that are looking for Irshad in order to kill her.>

It should be known that that Irshad Manji was brought up as an Ismaili. Ismailis are a very liberal sect of Islam and can very easily pass as Episcopalians in hijabs and kufis. I know several and this is no exaggeration either.

She is gay and seems to be an strong advocate of modernism and secularism. I guess as long as she weakens the radical violent strain of Islam from within the enemy of my enemy can be a friend.>

curiouser and curiouser...
