You ask:

Who took over $1 million from the Orthodox Church in America? Why can't the Metropolitan account for it? Why give money if the church can't say where it's going?

10.04.06 LATEST NEWS from same site:

Withholding Assessments, 2008 Council Dominate Midwest Resolutions

Six different resolutions advocating withholding assessments from the Central Church Administration have been submitted for consideration at the 45th Diocesan Assembly of the OCA's largest diocese, to be held October 10-12 in Palatine, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

The Columbus Deanery resolution (composed of 10 parishes in Ohio and Indiana) advocates withholding, as do resolutions from five of the nine parishes making resolutions. The parishes making resolutions to withhold represent a wide spectrum of the diocese - from old inner-city cathedrals to new missions; from suburban Cleveland to rural Wisconsin. In fact, seventeen of the nineteen proposed resolutions relate to the OCA's national crisis; only one deals solely with administration of the Diocese of the Midwest.

In addition to withholding assessments, bequests and donations to the OCA, six separate resolutions express support holding the next All-American Council in summer 2008, if not sooner, in summer 2007. Additional resolutions call for more investigations into the current scandal: one by a panel of bishops, another for a committee composed of bishops, priests and laity. Two different resolutions advocate the Metropolitan consider resignation.

Other resolutions seek reassurance for the health and integrity of the OCA Pension Plan, advocating a complete audit, Another encourages each diocese and parish to seek its own not-for-profit tax status lest the OCA lose its tax status. (This dire, but unlikely possibility, was first suggested by the Metropolitan himself in April 2006). The most recent resolution calls for a 'repudiation' and 'return' of the Honesdale Bank loan.

The key day is in the Assembly is Thursday, October 12th. In the morning the diocese will elect two representatives to the OCA Metropolitan Council, and then vote on the resolutions that afternoon. OCANews.org will be posting reports from the Assembly on both Wednesday and Thursday, October 11 and 12.

We saw at the annual meeting Monday that $8.75 per member per month (i.e., $105 per person per year) is assessed on OCA parishes, which is to be sent to the HQ.>

FWIW, Eric is right. The money going to Syosset is $105 per adult communicant member per year. Please don't stop supporting your local parishes just because you're worried about the $105. It's disgraceful to be sure, but that amount should pale mightily before the amount given to your parish. Folks are tithing, right? RIGHT? (The czar and basileus are both dead.)

We do pray that the sickness in Syosset is remedied soon.>

Tony:

You know, it could just be a glitch. Remember, most of the last few days' posts weren't about his conversion.>

Gee-wasn't there a catholic parish--parish mind you--missing like 8,000,000 ?

Isn't the Metropolitan takeing responsibility?

I'd say OCA is way ahead of the power curve here, compared to the RCC.>

So ... is there any truth to the claim made by "W Chulik" in the combox to the mega-post re: converting to Orthodoxy that the missing $1 million was blackmail "hush money"?>

Meanwhile, check out this comment from Father Richard John Neuhaus at First Things:

Over on Beliefnet.com, Rod Dreher explains at length why he and his family have left the Catholic Church for Orthodoxy. It is painful reading, as it was undoubtedly painful for him to write. For those whom I have described as ecclesial Christians, Orthodoxy has to be very seriously considered. In Catholic Matters, I discuss some of those considerations and why I am convinced that an ecclesial Christianity is more fully realized in the Catholic Church.

Having said that, however, Dreher s essay is important. Yes, his decision is in large part reactive. But he is reacting to very real corruptions in the Catholic Church. I hope every Catholic bishop and priest will read his essay, and especially those bishops and priests who are inclined to heave a sigh of relief that we have weathered the sex-abuse scandal. And every Catholic engaged in the standard intra-church quarrels, whether on the left or the right, should take to heart what he says about Catholics being more preoccupied with church battles than with following Jesus.

Dreher concludes his reflection with this: Still, those of you more charitably inclined, please just pray for me and my family, that we always live in truth, and do the right thing, and be found pleasing to God, the Father of us all. No Catholic should hesitate to join in that prayer. -30-

I would only add one thing: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.>
