Webb's inroads

Tuesday November 7, 2006

CNN exit polling showing that a majority of women voters in Virginia went for Jim Webb, suggesting that Allen's attacks on him for his anti-women-in-combat stances of years ago didn't work. Interestingly, a third of Virginia voters who voted to ban gay marriage also voted for Webb. Democrats really do have a chance to peel away social conservatives if they actually run socially conservative Democrats.

Rod:

The more well-known conservative pundits have been decrying a possible takeover of the House (and Senate) by Democrats, evidently assuming that all Democrats are the "liberals" who often seem to take the headlines. However, I have a suspicion that if -- when? -- Democrats take over the House (and Senate?) we will discover that the majority of them are generally moderate (toward center) as opposed to "liberal" (hard left). Or perhaps it's just wishful thinking on my part.>

I hate to break it to you, Rod, but Webb really isn't a social conservative outside of affirmative action and there simply isn't any evidence to back up the claim that he is. If Webb wins it will be precisely because he is not a social conservative.>

I would describe Webb as a cultural conservative, not a social con.>

It's ironic, but I think that social conservatives, particularly the Black churches, coming to the polls to vote for the marriage amendment, probably wound up voting for Webb as well.>
