Goodbye 2006

Sunday December 31, 2006

Well, we're worn out from all the traveling, so it's a quiet New Year's Eve here. The boys are in bed, the baby is in her bassinet, and Julie and I just popped open a bottle of ice-cold Veuve Clicquot,...

Pop corn and football with family in Georgia and, tomorrow, we start the long drive back to Beltwayland.

Merry Christmas, for those still celebrating the 12-day season!>

Is it me, or does it seem like a quiet New Year's in general?>

We are drinking a "lingonberry sparkling juice beverage" and playing a vintage game of Careers with our elder daughter. I always wanted this game when I was a kid, but didn't get it, and my husband mysteriously obtained it for me this Christmas. Our two grandsons (ages 2 and 4) are asleep downstairs, and their father went down to check on them and fell asleep too! So we're going to have sparklers and noisemakers tomorrow when it gets dark. Meat Loaf is singing "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" on TV in the background. He looks as if he'd have a heart attack by the dashboard light if he went looking for paradise in his current incarnation. If we didn't have company, we'd probably be drinking champagne and pretending to be "barely seventeen and barely dressed," in spite of the fact that we're getting old at the same rate as Mr. Loaf--but we have company so we have to pretend we are sedate now. However, my husband won the Careers game with 30 Happiness points, because he's still that kind of a guy. And therefore it is already a happy new year.>

Cool! I spent the last four seconds of the balldropping replay discovering that my computer clock (which I opened to watch the year change from 2006) is 2 seconds faster than what they're using in Times Square!

I spent the evening reading Robert Baer's "See No Evil" (how do ya'll get those italics to work in this combox?). A scary read and a real eye opener for one who works in the energy industry (me).

Seriously, I've been enjoying it, and I did have options (i.e., a party and a date if I wanted it, but that's another story).

Happy New Year to us all. May it be better than the last few.

I sat in bed reading while my wife and our eight day old boy alternately nursed and slept. I forgot it was New Year's Eve until the fireworks and smattering of gunfire rang out at midnight. My sleep schedule is as wacked-out as it's been since college, and I'm now up at one in the morning baking a Marie Calendar's pie (not very crunchy, I know) for the post-Liturgy meal at church tomorrow celebrating St. Basil's feast day.>

We had the five year old grand daughter over for the night. We were in bed by ten thirty. I didn't wake to any gunshots or firecrackers which surprised me. Our neighborhood is growing up around us and we have a lot of young couples with kiddos up to teen age years.

I'm excited about 2007.>

Rachel the italics and bold type is easy. You put an arrow an i for italics or b for bold type. Put in what you want highlighted. Then you do you You can look up quick html tags also and find all kinds of neat things to do.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!>

We spent my 11 yo's dream evening, or pretty close to it (he would have liked it better if the two oldest had stayed home). Mom, Dad, sister, two brothers, and a friend of sister played Sorry, Monopoly, and Apples to Apples. We then watched the ball fall in Times Square and went to bed. Definitely low key... Did you know that you can monopolize the houses in Monopoly so that your opponents can't buy them? My team (the girls, of course) had enough monopolies to move the houses as we bought hotels. We sank the boys, who were expecting a different outcome. A new strategy, at least for our place. Happy New Year!>

Happy New Year to you all. We had hamburgers and a bottle of red wine, watched Snow White with the boys and the Twilight Zone marathon on SciFi. My husband fell asleep at 11:00, so we didn't get to drink our Mumm's Cuvee Napa. Still and all, a generally decent 2006. With all due condolences to the Ford family, 2007 is off to a great start in that I get an extra day off tomorrow thanks to the President's memorial service. That, and the Horns won their 3rd straight bowl game, life is good.>

We did the same thing....stayed home, our 2 year old in bed, and drank a bottle of Veuve Clicquot! It was great. I didn't have any L.L. Bean pajamas, though. :-)

I am thankful for many things that happened this year...the best being the baptism of our son into the Orthodox Church. I am Orthodox (convert), but my husband is not. However, he told me early this year that he thought we should have him baptized. May God grant many years to my son, Declan.

Many years to you and your family, Rod.

Happy New Year to everyone!>

Slight correction (and a chance to check out the instructions Harvey posted for making italics), the book I was reading is Sleeping with the Devil by Robert Baer. Had already read See No Evil by Baer.

I thought when I posted my entry that I was ready to turn in, but no, I quick channel surf revealed that Dog the Bounty Hunter was planning his wedding, so while watching that and nursing a run and coke, I wrote a cheesy poem (entitled Bad Love Poem) and finally called it a night at 5:00 a.m. Definitely one of the most interesting, spontaneous, and fun New Years Eves I've spent in a long time.

Thanx for the help Harvey, but after previewing this, I see I can make things italic, bold, and aqua (guess that's what the a is), but I can't undo it (that is, whatever it is I'm typing after what I want to emphasize isn't the right thing, and the preview screen doesn't include your post).

Boy Howdy, what a year we're going to have girl! Doesn't that sound like fun?>

Rachel

Ah, Harvey, I could swear I tried that one, but who knows!

Here we go again!

Yes, indeed, a year of fun. The rumor is that what one does on New Years (is it only at the stroke of midnight or is it the entire event) defines how one will spend the rest of the year. I hope it isn't watching Dog the Bounty Hunter and writing bad poetry, but I do hope it is every bit as fun, for me and for us all.

OK, it didn't work. I followed all your instructions, but on the entry screen the little bracket thingies (shift periods and shift commas- I can't even get them to display in quotes - there must be something terribly weird going on somewhere in the netherworld of my operating system). Guess I'll keep using quotes instead of italics...

Thanx again, Harvey.

We've got black eyed peas cooking on the stove. There's ham left overs begging for placing with them on a plate. There's fresh cabbage wanting to be cooked. And I'm getting ready to make some Texas Caviar to have with crackers. (Texas Caviar, think pico de gallo with black eyed peas of luck)

I'm listening to the Razorbacks get their butts handed to them in the background. Even Dozer the new puppy has his head under the covers in shame. I hope they can pull a comeback. One of the grandkids might end up there someday.>

We spent a wonderful New Year's Eve the same way we have for over a decade now: celebrating our oldest daughter's birthday! I can't believe she's eleven years old already; I can't believe she's such a lovely and responsible young lady already; I can't believe she's taller than me already!

Our celebratory beverage was the one preferred by World War I flying ace beagles everywhere.

Happy New Year!>

Where does my fun begin??

Woke up (involuntarily) VERY early in the morning of the 30th with the stomach flu (which has been going around the area very strong this season), and "celebrated" NYE by eating dry toast, a banana, and cream of wheat.

Can life get any better?? (Good lord, I hope so!!) :-) :-)

But today's another day and all is well, so, yes, Life Is Good once again.

Happy New Year To All,>

Since my ill health is now history, I'm celebrating the new year reveling in seeing my USC Trojans win the Rose Bowl, and excitedly anticipating the outright thrashing my (new) second favorite team, the LSU Tigers are going to lay on the Shouldn't Be There In The First Place

I lounged around most of the day in front of the fire and watched football. I spent Christmas week between Pittsburgh(visiting parents) and NYC(visiting in-laws).

I didn't get to see the team that I wanted to see(Penn State)because we don't get ESPN. I was glad to hear that they won. I was glad to see WVU win. I was cheering for Michigan, but they got crushed. I'm watching BSU and OU in the Fiesta Bowel. The little guys are kicking some butt, but it's early.>
