Well, there you go, then!
Flannery O'Connor, herself in a battle against lupus, once said sickness -- meaning serious, chronic illness -- is a country unto itself, a place people go to with diagnoses like the one Elizabeth Edwards just received. Having been there at one time, and always ready to go back at a moment's notice, I know exactly what she meant.
As I'm sure Elizabeth Edwards knows, as does her political rival Tony Snow, who has surgery on Monday to determine whether or not a tumor is cancerous, to live is the goal that supercedes every other once the battle is joined
I don't think that we should talk about Elizabeth Edwards as if she's passed away, but I do think that she is deserving of a lot of sympathy. I feel sorry for her. I feel sorry for her husband. I feel sorry for her children. 5 year survival for stage IV breast cancer is 20%. I don't think that we should strip her of hope, but let's not pretend that this is like any other chronic illness.
I don't know the specifics of David Kuo's cancer. "Cancer" is a generic term. His chronic cancer might be very different than Ms. Edwards. I hope that his has a better prognosis than 20% 5 year survival.
I think we should feel sorry for anyone in politics. Cancer? You have my prayers.
