What moral courage in the clergy can do

Friday March 16, 2007

Powerful prophetic witness from the OCA's Archbishop Job of Chicago, and Father John Reeves of Pennsylvania! In all human enterprises, only God knows how much wrongdoing and suffering might have been avoided if only good men had chosen to speak up instead of remaining silent "for the good of [the Church, the company, the institution...]."

Archbishop Job and Fr. Reeves chose the road rarely taken -- and they have apparently made a big difference.

The Council then voted unanimously to recommend to the Synod of Bishops (which meets next week in Syosset) that Fr. Kondratick be suspended pending an ecclesiastical trial. The Council then voted to recommend to the Synod that the Commission's report be released to the Church following its presentation to the Synod (albeit in a redacted form so as to minimize any potential civil liabilities). The meeting adjourned soon thereafter. Keep us posted how the good archbishops vote - i.e., whether they go with the Commission or with the Metropolitan.

There is both more and less to this than meets the eye. There is less, in the sense that the Metropolitan Council is not a ruling body of the Church (the Holy Synod of Bishops is such), and there is more, in the sense that Fr John has been a constant (and articulate) critic of the policy of ecumenism in the OCA under Leonid Kishlovsky. I would reccommend both "The Price of Ecumenism" and "Strange Yokefellows Newsconference" as introductions to Fr John's ideas (which are spot-on, BTW) It all depends on the decsion of the bishops next week. The initial signs are not good. The article given on oca.org was uninformative, and Metropolitan Herman is clearly against it. This situation has been simmering since October 2005, and I believe we have not seen the worst of it yet. As for Vladyki Dmitri, it also does not look as though he is completely out of the woods in this case. Firstly, he accepted Fr Robert as clergy in his diocese, knowing of his past. Secondly, there was a recent blurb on (I believe) oca.org concerning the parish in Florida where Fr Robert is serving. It was fulsome and nauseating. Vladyki Dmitri said nothing.
Again, there is much more to this than can be dealt with in a short post. Those of us in the OCA have the curse of living in "interesting times". Time shall tell us if Fr John and Vladyki Job stay the course. One hopes that they shall.

http://www.ocanews.org/reflections.html Fr. Thomas Hopko weighs in on the side of the Commission. That might be a positive sign. On the other hand, the rest of the columns/posts on the above page paint a dismal and hopeless picture.
