Andrew Sullivan says good riddance to Karl Rove, but the mighty David Kuo, who worked in the White House with Rove, says rumors of his political demise -- and the end of the "permanent Republican majority" -- are greatly exaggerated.:
Why? Because as Karl learned, leading is hard and the Democrats are doing it very poorly. It tends to be glossed over but Congressional approval ratings are lower than presidential approval ratings. Democratic initiatives on Capitol Hill are failing, the Democrats have plenty of issues ahead of them that could easily turn the American public against them even more.
While it's hard to imagine the Democrats being so inept that they'd make the public dislike and distrust them more than they currently do the Republicans, it's worth remembering that the Dems responded to the crushing humiliations of Watergate and the Vietnam withdrawal by giving us ... Jimmy Carter. Which in turn produced Ronald Reagan, and a massive realignment of American politics to the right.

"Fools"???
Don't you mean "SUCKERS!"?
The good thing about Democrats almost defintely winning the next election? Once there, THEY'LL be the ones messing things up---and then it'll be the CONSERVATIVES turn to ctiticize, to write the books and the TV shows (well, not so many of those, but still) and make the jokes. It'll be the Clinton days all over again...
But it's true, Mr. Kuo has a point. Maybe the Dems can fix all the GOP problems---though even that's not totally right, since their positions on things like illegal immigration are just as upopular---but are any of their own ideas that good? After they pull out of Iraq, will they know how to deal with the Middle East? Will they cut spending? We're almost sure to have a Democratic president in '08, but by '12, maybe not, almost certainly not by '16.
God bless.
"and then it'll be the CONSERVATIVES turn to ctiticize, to write the books and the TV shows"
When did they ever stop? They proved not only to be sore losers but sore winners.
I remember the famous "malaise speech" the Carter gave. it was really on target. Someone needs to stand up and give a speech like that again..
Anyone who repeats the Carter malaise speech had better plan on retiring from public office because even though no one will actually listen to it (the mute button, remember) they will hear every commentator on whatever news show tearing him to pieces.
