Victor Morton sends along the bad news. Man, the icons of my misspent Seventies childhood are falling one by one. First we lost Charles Nelson Reilly this year, and now this. If Fannie Flagg or Gary Burghoff or Richard Dawson...
The repartee was so witty between Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly -- never mind that my folks shouldn't have been letting me watch Match Game in the first place, and that I was too young to get all the double entendres (though I was precocious enough to get the non-sexual jokes, which were surprisingly plentiful if you watch the repeats) -- I actually thought they were MARRIED.
Obviously, I hadn't learned yet that men and women were not the only combination in the constellation ;-P
RIP Brett. (And Charles.)

For some reason, when I was a kid I always thought that Brett was a man in drag. Don't know why exactly, although it may have something to do with comparing her to Reilly, whom I thought was a "sissy."
Despite my confusion, and not getting a lot of the jokes, I did find them funny...

Alas, I don't remember her well. But Charles Nelson Reilly and Paul Lynde, sure. I do remember Kitty Carlisle, Fannie Flag, and Betty White (I remember Betty before she traded on her preturnatural sweetness to create Sue Anne Nivens and become a self-parodist).
Funny people, all.

I was so sad to hear she died. My mom is a HUGE match game fan and so, even though I'm 25 and missed it the first time 'round, Mom had us watch her on Game Show Network.
I agree--if Richard or Fannie go, I'm done.

Man, this is sad news indeed. It's somehow poetic that Brett and Charles went in the same year...

On the other hand...reading this has cheered me tremendously. I didn't realize Richard Dawson was still alive. But we did also loose Tom Poston recently. He, too, was a treasure.

Speaking of Newhart and Tom Poston, saw several years back where Suzanne Pleshette underwent a sucessful cancer surgery, so hope she's doing well. (Yes, I saw the recent tabloid cover that has her at death's door, but didn't even bother to read it).
I know this is from the 80's, but the final scene of Newhart was classic (The one where he wakes up in bed from his dream...). That and the scene where Tom Poston's character introduces himself then says, "That's Larry's brother Darryl, and his other brother Darryl".
Great stuff!!

RIP,Brett Somers.
First Charles, now Brett.
My kitsch levels need replenishing...
