You have got to stop whatever you're doing and listen to our friend Rawlins Gilliland's public radio commentary offered this morning. His subject: death, or to be more precise, funerals. It's one of the funniest things ever. You can read the commentary, but the printed word cannot do it justice. A lot of the comic effect is in Rawlins's delivery. I caught it driving in the morning, and when he drawled the phrase "asthmatic javelinas," well, I nearly had to pull over.
My question is: why doesn't somebody give Rawlins Gilliland a radio show? He's one of the best storytellers EVER. If KERA, our Dallas public radio station, would give him one hour on Sunday nights for something called "Rawlins Gilliland's Texas," and just turn him loose to have on as his guests Texans to talk about this weird, wonderful state (of mind), he'd be a national cult smash.

I get my dose of gallows humor from The Darwin Awards.
Forgive me.
Pretty funny, Rawlins. Your mother sounds like a fine lady with a great sense of humor.
That was a really nice story.
I've kinown Rawlins since first grade at James B. Bonham Elementary (now, that was a looooooooooong time ago). He's always had the knack that we all appreciate now. I agree ~ put him on the radio.
As soon as I posted this, I picked up the phone and called a friend whose in production at KERA, and left him a message saying he had to create a show called "Rawlins Gilliland's Texas" RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE.
