We should have listened
Today we've got to take Lucas, who is 3 1/2, in for an exploratory medical procedure, to confirm a preliminary diagnosis made earlier this week by an internal medicine specialist. I'm being cagey about what he's dealing with, only because...
The human mind is one of the greatest mysteries of creation. Who are we to place limits on what God has created? I truly believe that God has gifted some people with senses that are not really supernatural, but also not understood by current medical science. In another 100 years, a woman like this may be training and honing her unique sense in a medical school. Who are we to know?
Actually it is not that surprising at all. When my father had his first heart attack centuries ago, my great aunt Lula called my grandmother from her farm in Minnesota to ask what was wrong. She knew that something was, but did not know what.
I had the great pleasure to know Dora Kunz, the grandmother of Therapeutic Touch, and she could diagnose an illness before it even showed up in the person's body!
Our family will keep yours in our prayers, Rod.
Police departments -- the most by the book institution there is other than the military -- frequently use psychics. Presumably they think there's something to it.
Again, wishing all the best to you, Lucas, and the entire family.
You do seem to have a lot of paranormal and metaphysical experiences, Rod. Which is a lot more than I've had, which is to say none.
My prayers for Lucas. Save, O Lord, and have mercy on him, and give mercy, life, peace, salvation and visitation to Rod and Julie.
And, like Scott, you've had a lot more paranormal experiences than I've had, which is none or close to none.
My prayers will be with Lucas and your family. I'm glad to hear that it's not life threatening.
That's some crazy story. I think that there are a lot of scammers out there who fool people with the psychic stuff, but I've heard enough stories like yours to be convinced that there really are psychics.
I have one that comes to mind. I was watching some stupid talk show(can't remember which one) when Clinton was in office. One of the guests was a psychic who was making predictions about the upcoming year. He said that Clinton was going to be caught up in a scandal from which he would not recover. He said that it was different from every allegation thus far-Whitewater, Travelgate, etc. He said that he wouldn't be thrown out of office, but it would be close, and he would never fully recover from it.
My wife, a physician, worked for the Indian Health Service for a few years. She was frequently approached about "alternative medicine;" some was a part of traditional native culture, some was decidedly new age. Her basic approach was to listen, to determine whether the proposal were dangerous or benign based on her medical training, and to discourage the former while being open to the latter. Obviously, there are a multitude of difficult cases that fall in between those poles, but I still find that a good rule of thumb.
May the Protecting Veil of the Theotokos enfold and protect Lucas!
Rod, I am constantly amazed at the supernatural stuff that seems to happen to you. I’m a lifelong Catholic and stuff like that never happens to me. St. Therese can’t even be bothered to send me a rose. :)
Seriously, though, that really is amazing. I’m so glad they found out what the problem was. Your son is in my prayers. I wonder if the woman was a Christian. I always thought most so-called “physics” were dabblers in the occult, but I think God does give people those gifts sometimes.
While I am completely skeptical about 99.99% of psychic claims, I am a believer that the ability does exist. I just think its a rare and extraordinary gift, not one that's common enough to supply the mammoth psychic industry with enough psychics to man countless hotlines etc. and enable it to rake in billions from gullible people.
I think that the person who makes a big deal out of their abilities and makes a boatload of cash to boot are everyone of them giant fakes on the level of any sleaze bag televangelist. I think the people who really do have it tend to be a lot more humble about it. I think real gifts tend to inspire humility rather than to puff up. I think those who really do have the ability most likely never charge for helping someone out. If you really had an extraordinary gift, wouldn't you do the same? Wouldnt it just blow your mind? Wouldnt you most likely conclude that the gift was for the benefit of others and not for yourself?
I said that I was a believer at the top of this reply. I am for two reasons. One, I had an experience with a Romanian woman who read my palm for no charge whatsoever and absolutely nailed both my family dynamics, some of my internal personal struggles and the fact that I don't want to have children, most likely because of my past experiences. This impressed me to no end because I once paid a palm reader on a lark to give a reading and she predicted I would have two kids, a boy and a girl. I knew she was giving me want she thought I wanted. Two, I myself, while I would never claim to have a gift, did have a prophetic dream once about a disaster in our recent history. I have never gotten over it to this day. It really shook me up. Always will.
I think the ability might exist both in its full form in a rare few and in the occasional and unrepeatable experiences of many more people like myself as an innate and built-in ability, a channel that lies quiet until and if God opens it for whatever his own reasons. This channel would therefore be part of our design and possibly the mechanism behind not just real psychics but also the prophets too.
We all know that our God loves to enflesh his thoughts. It then doesnt become so hard to believe that he would have built something into us which would allow us to receive knowledge of things from Him that we couldnt otherwise know.
It has been my experience that God provides psychic experiences to people as a gift and that lack thereof doesn't indicate inferior spirituality or favor from God. He has many gifts, some of which as humans we can readily see as remarkable, but some of which on this side of the grave we have trouble even percieving. But it can be hard not to feel jealous when others experience these sorts of things and we don't.
I also think that in some ways being the recipient of gifts from God such as psychic phenomena or visions or such can be problematic for many people in the long run. At some point God may want someone to move beyond such obvious indications of his care and reality to work on faith and remove such gifting. I would guess that this is what happened to Mother Theresa - she was gifted with visions and such as a young person and when God removed them from her, she felt set adrift for the remainder of her life. I am certain that God honored her faithfulness through that long empty time, but I am also sure that He would rather have her come to know Him in a new way as well.
When I was younger, I frequently had experiences of God which were very profound for me. More than once I had the very real sensation that Jesus was sitting with me in a difficult time and the Holy Spirit was hovering over me, keeping guard. It may sound silly, but I can't describe it well is the problem. However, when I was 21 God removed that from me and for years I felt like I was alone. That God was out there some where, watching perhaps, but certainly not near or trying to interact with me. After about 5 years I was reading scriptures and started to notice all the places where Paul talks about things like Christ living in us, and that it is in God that we live and move and breathe and have our being. I decided that although I hadn't sensed the presense of God in years that I would go forward in my life under the assumption that God does what He says He does and that I was indeed so close to God that He dwelt in me and filled my very lungs with His presense. I stopped trying to seek God from without myself and live in the knowlege of Him within me. What I discovered was that God was indeed present in me, closer in the time where I was not aware of His presense than He had ever been. He revealed to me that He had removed my sense of His presence being around, or outside, of me because if He hadn't I would never have realized the reality of the indwelling of His Spirit in my life. It's been about 7 years now and although my experience of God is different than it used to be and even more subtle in some ways, it is also much more powerful.
I'm not sure all that made much sense, but I guess what I want to say is that those who have not had the sort of paranormal experiences Rod has been gifted with need not take that as any reflection on God's pleasure with them or lack on their part. God works in many, many ways and provides each of us with just what we need although not always with just what we want!
My prayers for Lucas and you and Julie. My younger brother and his wife went thru a bit of hell a couple years ago when my then 3-yrs old niece was, after several tests and weeks of uncertainty, found to be suffering from a disease called dermatomyositis (parents: if your kids develop a sudden rash or appear to have less muscle strength than they once had, go see your doctor). Thank God, it was treatable and my niece is now a pretty normal active little girl (who must stay out of the sun as much as possible unfortunately :-(
Anyway, my hopes and prayers that all will be well.
The psychic incident is a bit spooky, but I am with Anglican Peggy in being open to the idea that we can sometimes receive knowledge in supernatural ways. I think what we call hunches or gut feelings are the ordinary human experience of this gift, but I am perfectly able to conceive that for some the gift is more developed or profound.
I think that when things like this happen, the scenario described is exactly how they should happen. Your Mother-in-law wasn't seeking out information, she wasn't paying her for a response, the knowledge just came - that is a true gifting. And I wouldn't describe this woman as a 'psychic', but rather a prophetess.
Just to be clear I am highly skeptical of these sort of claims, and even as a Christian I am highly skeptical of charismatic displays, but when it happens it happens, and it's not 'spooky', but the way God can work.
Psychics? Prophetesses?
Is there any garbage people won't buy into these days?
Prayers of healing to your family, Rod. And prayers for wisdom and a steady hand for all the care providers involved in the procedure today.
Hope all is well with y'all .... and Anglican Peggy spoke well for me too.
It's not garbage if it happened. Are you implying that Rod is lying?
I have to say Rod, and I mean this sincerely, not sarcastically, I wish I had half the number of weird, supernatural-type occurences in my life that you seem to run into.
I hope all goes well with Lucas, he'll be in my prayers; please keep us posted. God bless.
Rod, you and your family will have many people praying for you tonight. God bless you, every one.
Thanks again everybody. I must say that it doesn't matter to me if someone disbelieves in what this stranger said to Julie's mom about Lucas. We obviously didn't take it seriously at the time, and we wish we had done. It's easy to disbelieve these things, until you see and hear it with your own eyes.
The point here; it is time to pray for Rod and his son and wife and family.
Per skeptics regarding inexplicable life experiences: People who cannot grasp the impossible cannot possibly grasp the possible.
here's hoping that Lucas soon is restored to full health...
now, about this amazing story of the stranger...
there's nothing at all in this story that points to the idea of God...
not to the Christian idea of God and not to any other of the multitudes of worldwide ideas of God...
it's a leap of blind faith to hold that the stranger's prediction is somehow connected to God...
I mean...
I believe in the Reality of God...
but there seems to be no known details about God...
which includes no details about whether or not this psychic stuff has anything directly to do with God...
faith hope love joy peace to all...
God's healing for your son and prayers for your family Rod!
Glory be to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Mena olam vada menaolam ol'meen Ameen.
Heavenly Father, physician of our souls and bodies, Who have sent Your only-begotten Son and our Lord Jesus Christ to heal every sickness and infirmity, visit and heal also Your servant Luke from all physical and spiritual ailments through the grace of Your Christ. Grant him patience in this sickness, strength of body and spirit, and recovery of health. Lord, You have taught us through Your word to pray for each other that we may be healed. I pray, heal Your servant Luke and grant to him the gift of complete health. For You are the source of healing and to You I give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lord who came down from heaven and stayed in the womb of St. Mary, after making the annunciation to her through his head of angels, is blessed. The Lord is blessed whom the heaven and earth, Angels and the mankind are praising always. Oh Lord let the intercession of your mother be a fort for us all. Barekmor.
Peace be unto thee, Mother of the Sun of righteousness. Peace be unto you the palace of holiness, Peace be unto you the ship full of blessings, the fruit of your virginity is blessed, Holy Mother please pray for us, so that we would also be holy like you in our lives.
Morioyo-rahe-melain-uvadarain (Lord have mercy upon us).
Lord Jesus, who was kind enough to take the presence in humble virgin, kindly live in us and redeem us from the strong bondages of sins and death. Lord make us good and worthy divine homes, so that you could stay in us.
Lord who had been kind enough to take the human body from the virgin, unite us all in your peace. Unite us all with your grace. Fill your love in us so that we could share the love with you and among us all. Make us worthy to praise thee with your blessed Mother and all the saints.
Holy virgin Mother, you are blessed, By thy prayers let the Holy church and her children be saved from all sorts of calamities and let all the departed get forgiveness for their sins.
Ameen.
Rod,
About the "psychic", is it possible that Julie's mom may have said a little more about the illness to the client? Is it possible that the client had medical experience (doctor, nurse) or that she or a family member had the same symptoms/illness? I have told numerous people that they should go to a doctor for X, just from hearing their symptoms - I am no doctor, but I have many family in the medical profession and I hear about disease and illness everyday, I also read a LOT of medical related articles (being an unusually fast reader helps - I suppose that is a gift, in a way). I don't consider myself psychic at all (although I too have had eerie premonitions and odd feelings at times, even "visions"/dreams from multiple family members that have gone to the Lord) just more informed about certain things than most people care to learn about or really have the time to.
From a Biblical perspective there is no reason to believe that God can not and would not gift someone in a particular way. I don't see the point in doubting so as to limit the work of the Holy Spirit. My wife and I had a experience a few years ago. We were referred to a "Christian" woman (in quotations because more information that came later leads me to question her true faith) who had shown a gift of healing. My wife paid her a visit on a chronic problem and we believe that the visit helped. However, some of the statements she made during the session were troubling so we never paid another visit.
My point is that God may choose to gift people with abilities for no other purpose that His own. I am not saying you should or should not have listened, but He certainly provided you with sound evidence of His divine interest in you family's well-being.
stay crunchy!
Br Josh
Rod, may you and your family experience the full blessings of God.
I think they call these people medical intuitives as opposed to psychics. Carolyn Myss is one. You might find her work interesting.
Just wanted to let you know that you and your family are in my prayers. God bless!
Hope your son is feeling better soon!
You and your family are in my prayers.
