Oh man. Oh man. Oh man. A week from tonight, I will literally be at Wendell Berry's place in Kentucky. How am I ever going to live this down? We're having one of our parish priests over to dinner tonight....
I'm here sorrowing right along with you. This is way worse than the Cubs losing last week. That we expect. The earth keeps turning on its axis. A Tigers loss is like a painful gash in the space/time continuum. I am keeping the faith and still whispering "Geaux Tigers!"

There is even mourning here in the Great White North - or at least our little corner of it (Central Wisconsin). My 9yo son was probably the most distraught of our household last night. We're mourning with you.
P.S. I was reading your blog a few months ago and realized that my husband and I were at LSU at the same time you were - 1985-1990. Geaux Tigers!

Didn't have a cat in the fight (get it ;)) for the LSU - UK game, though if this were basketball, I'd be enraged as how I hate UK basketball in general. :-)
But, USC won and Notre Dame lost, so in my world, life is good today.
Hope all turns out well for the Tigers and their fans.

I need a new television set.
Just kidding. I gave up the hard stuff years ago; now I only throw pillows and empty Coke cans at the TV set during games like yesterday's LSU debacle. The best shot hit the "off" button dead on.
There was a blue cloud hovering in the living room, however. It's much easier to deal with football futility like Nebraska's this season, mainly because you have no expectations to be crushed and the games are already well out of hand by halftime.
That is, once you get used to using the words "football," "Nebraska" and "futility" in the same sentence. Draft Tom Osborne as athletic director NOW!

As a fan of, um, another SEC team which now has the same conference record as LSU, I was mathematically compelled to root for Kentucky. Nothing personal, you understand. And it's bittersweet anyway, since the net effect will probably only be to increase the margin by which you beat us.
But ain't the SEC something? We don't have any bad teams anymore. For that matter, ain't this whole season something?

In fairness, Rod, this is such a crazy season that the University of South Florida (which is nowhere near South Florida, and didn't even have a Division I football team a few years ago) is #2 in the nation.
Plus, that UK quarterback is awfully good ...

Larry,
In fairness, though, South Florida is pretty much just beating up on other tiny Florida schools. Their only quality wins are over teams that everyone now knows were considerably overrated. Once they play an LSU or Ohio State (have to thrown my Big Ten in there, even if it is the damned Buckeyes), they'll get put in their place.
You're right in general, though, this certainly is the wackiest year of college football I've seen in a long time. Certain Michigan-related events that will remain nameless, USC losing to Stanford, half the top ten losing two weeks ago, 4 the week after, and 1 & 2 both going down yesterday. I think I'm GLAD the Maize & Blue aren't rated so highly - that seems to be the recipe for disaster right now.

OH..
..IO!!!
In all honesty, I think LSU and Florida re the best 2 teams in the country. The Big Ten needs to fire its director and rethink how the conference schedules. Granted the Buckeyes have played 2 teams that attracted a lot of hype before Laurenitis deflated their balloons (Purdue, Washington), but if the Big Ten want to stay competitive, we need to schedule non-conference games against the SEC EVERY YEAR. Big Ten style football is a great tradition, but our coaches need to be forced to plan against the lunatic offences of Urban Meyer et al before the ^#%^@##^$ Bowl Game.
I was so happy when Ohio State played Texas early two years in a row - that was a worthy challenge and we learned a lot. I suspect if we played LSU or Florida in week 2 we'd lose - for now. Make it a tradition, and Ohio State or Michigan would win as often as they lose in such early games after a few years. There are not enough good Big Ten teams for Ohio State and Michigan to play, and as a result the Wolverines and the Buckeyes in last year's Bowl Games looked unprepared and soft.
Don't worry Rod, everybody will lose 1 this year - I expect LSU in the national title game. I'd bet on it, in fact.

William,
I don't know whether to be nice to you b/c you're from the Big Ten or rip you for being a Buckeye. :) I guess we're going regional right now, so I'll play nice.
Anyhow, you know what I really want to see? I want to see LSU, Florida, et al come up here in November and try playing in non-80 degree weather. It would be a learning experience for the Southerners, with lessons in "snow" and "frostbite." :) That's one definite disadvantage us Northern teams have right now - every single bowl game is played down South or on the West Coast, nothing up here in the cold. (God, by the way, intended for football to be played in the cold)

I could not agree more -
I demand a Frost Bowl, every other year, to be played at the Big House, the Horse Shoe, or up in Madison -
don't forget your earmuffs, Urban!
(and I always cheer for Michigan if they are playing outside the conference - i do not hate the Wolverines - I have family who went to school there and a distant relative who played wide receiver there, I am told, many decades ago)

I too always root for OSU - and any other Big Ten team - in non-conference play. It makes the Big Ten look better in comparison with other conferences, helps us all in the rankings, and besides, it's much more fun to beat you guys when you're undefeated. :) (John Cooper, anyone?)

Read just a few minutes ago where Nebraska fired their AD, and supposedly there could be a major housecleaning in Lincoln.
Morale in the AD department is reportedly bad, and even more urgent, from what I read, the main fundraiser has left -- which usually means other high rollers will too.
(Full disclosure -- I lived in Nebraska for several years back in the day, and though I never really got behind them -- Oklahoma was my team -- imagine how well THAT went over :-), I at least want to see them do well).

Fair enough. :) Sadly, the rest of their schedule is weak, so they might (heaven forbid) make it to the title game. That would be too bad, since they'd just get walked on.
