My kingdom for some protein powder

The deal is that I love me some steel-cut oatmeal in the ayem. And I love to dose it with a couple of heaping tablespoons of protein powder. Whole Foods used to carry a perfectly delicious soy powder, flavor of "natural," which blended nicely and unobtrusively with the oatmeal, and a splash of milk. All was well here in the control center of Levy Pants every morning. Is what I'm saying.

But then, Whole Foods turned evil. They quit carrying this particular brand of soy protein. In fact, you couldn't buy any soy protein there that wasn't pre-flavored with chocolate, vanilla, strawberry or some ginseng crap. I just wanted my plain soy protein. But no Whole Foods anywhere had it. I can't find it anywhere, as a matter of fact. The friendly dealer at my local WF suggested I try the whey-based protein. Nope, I've done that before. It tastes like dried nursing infant throw-up. So then he sent me home with a box of hemp protein. It tasted like mud that had been curing in Jerry Garcia's beard. I took it back.

Two days ago, he suggested rice protein. I took one bite of oatmeal this morning that had been dosed with the stuff, and literally spat it out. Horrible, horrible stuff. It was like somebody's grampaw left his dentures on the nightstand as he was running to get out of a burning house, and some weirdo found the charred teefs the next morning, and ground them into a powder for my oatmeal. Vomick. I'll be going to back to Whole Foods tomorrow for yet another refund.

Can any soy protein aficionados/freaks hook me up with some unflavored stuff? There shall be no peace in the valley until this problem is solved.

I don't use protein powder, but I can pass along another steel-cut oatmeal tip that's made our mornings especially wonderful: put a cup of oats and five cups of water in the slow-cooker before you go to bed, set it for nine or ten hours, and then wake up to a hot meal for two.

Rod,
For soy powder, see www.iherb.com and search for the Now Foods or Jarrow brands. Make sure it's fermented organic soy protein powder. Enjoy!

Dude, scramble an egg (or eggwhite) already! Failing that, spread some peanut butter on outrageously fibrous toasted bread--you know, the weird kind they keep at the bottom of the refrigerated section at Whole Foods. Have you read what too much soy can do to men?

Yeah, I love those steel cut oats, too, but my family can't stand'em. So, I get none.

Oatmeal with cold milk tastes good, too - as well as with cold vanilla soy milk (soy protein).

A great breakfast food is to get a few different kinds of whole uncut uncooked grains and a few kinds of dried fruit - raisins, apricots, whatever - and mix them in the proportion you want and put it in a covered container with enough water to cover it, or more (you'll have to experiment - I lost the "recipe" with the quantities and amount of water). Let it soak overnight in the refrigerator. If you used the right amount of water, the grains and fruit will absorb all the water and will neither be too dry, nor still have a lot of water in the container. If you used too much water, either stir it back in, or pour it out and/or drink it (since it contains good nutrients).

You will then have a very chewy and filling and CHEAP breakfast cereal that tastes great with cold milk and some sugar and will feed you for several days, depending on how much you make.

You will never have to worry about lack of fiber.

TVP - if you soke it the night before, you can just add it to it and it tastes like nothing -
