Monday October 8, 2007

Categories: Religion (general)
Remember when televangelist Oral Roberts said that a 900-foot Jesus had appeared to him and told him to build the City of Faith medical complex, and that it would be successful (it wasn't, clsoing after eight years)? Remember when Oral...

This makes me nauseous. Along with the post in j-walking last week about the preacher's booking contract (hairstylist and 10K jet fuel deposit).

You implied that Oral Roberts was dead, but the source articles claims he is semi-retired in California.

Richard's the guy who appeared on TV with one wife, only to appear with another one a short time later on the same broadcast without any explanation. I think there is some fire here to go along with this litigious smoke.

I've always been curious-what exactly would draw anyone to apply to, much less attend, ORU? Is it even accredited? It's like negative Ivy League on your resume. "Yes, I went to Yahoo Snakehander Ripoff Televangelist U; hire me!"

Never trust a guy named Oral! Especially when he names his son "Richard"! That guy has a frat-boy Bushian sense of humour...and spending.. which means the money goes without accountability.

Bugg/Jaybird,

Man, that's just some funny...stuff!

One question, is it a Dental College?

I'm not intentionally making a joke here, but wasn't Anita Hill associated with Oral Roberts University? Was that where she was teaching?
Maybe all those who consider her a hero can be reminded of that fact (if true - I don't have the time or motivation to look it up).

She did teach at Oral Roberts, a point she makes after Thomas smears her for not being religious enough and not being pure enough. When the law school was closed and handed over to Pat Robertson, she became a professor at the University of Oklahoma.

Oral Roberts Law school was always controversial, a lot like Ave Maria.

Another dog bites man story.

This is so expected by now, I can't even summon my usual rage against televangelists.

Yawn.

Kathie Lee Gifford attended there---they're fairly well-known for their music program...

the past claims of Oral Roberts himself...
and the current situations...
lead to the obvious conclusion...
that there is no Holy Spirit leading them...
it's as if the HS is just another name for God...
but as for being a guiding presence...
it's just...

wait for it...

...

a Myth...

It seems God is a good business to be in.

How stupid can the people sending this man money possibly be?

When I watched the press conference on CNN was I shocked that the president of a university couldn't pronounce litigious!

This man is and always has been a bad joke. His misdeeds are going to send him to a much, much hotter place. I wondered what he was in such a tizz about the first time God allegedly was going to come get him. Wouldn't logic dictate that if he was truly a man of God as he claims that he would want to go? Dumb!...and sadly, the people who bought his foolishness, dumber!

The original story was a laugh, but your post was a belly laugh - thanks!

ORU is the source of a bunch of converts to Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. I can think of a handful of RC and Orthodox priests who were once students there and the local Orthodox churches are full of ORU alums.

What are the implications of Mrs. Roberts calling "underaged males" in the middle of the night on university cell phones? Was she having phone sex? Selling drugs? What is that all about?

All the big names in the religious right are in it for the money and power. This is a guy who commuted weekly to Oklahoma from Florida on a private jet to play golf. (Probably the aforementioned jet he loaned to his daughter.)

He's personally spent enough of God's money on himself to feed a hundred needy people their entire life.

I worked for ORU as a staff member for 5 years. If any of these things are true then I can assure you, the board of regents who also have a strong financial intrest to see the University suceed, will make changes. I do not think it is fair to sit and make fun or ORU as the foundation of the University is good. It employs a lot of Tulsa people, the campus is good, the students who attend do get a good education. Are any of the charges true? Hard to say. Do odd things go on behind the scenes? With all high profile people and the conversations I have had with security staff "Off the record" possibly, but it is rumors. I do know other high profile evangilists kids who have been enrolled at ORU who have got into let's say campus hijinks got a pass. They are kids and human. Things they did are what kids do and just because they are evangilists kids does not mean they are holier than thou. People at ORU were great to work with, they are human, they may accidently let out a curse word, I did myself but know God forgives, if anyone thinks you walk on the campus and everyone is supposed to smile and walk around and hold your hand and say Jesus loves you, then you are a moron. Yes, Oral made mistakes, yes, Richard may have made mistakes, but to sit there and pass judgement on anyone, you need to wait and see what unvails. No one is any better than anyone else.
