Sic transit gloria Carl

Friday November 9, 2007

Categories: Culture

It is my sad duty to inform you that our friend Carl, the medallion-wearing hipster preacher who advocated attending a Chicago church because God might hook you up with a smokin' wife like Pastor Kent Munsey's, has been taken off of YouTube. What's crackin', Chicago? Not Carl, not no more. But wasn't he fun while he lasted? Julie's about ready to whack me over the head with a skillet, like Loweezy usedta do Snuffy Smith, because I won't stop saying, "What's crackin'?" around the house.

Harken back to that great prophet Flip Wilson, who had many skits on his TV show promoting the "Church of What's Happening Now." It's sad to think that he didn't live to see it, like Moses not making it back into the promised land.

I really couldn't tell if it was real at first. I try to give the mega-church movement the benefit of the doubt. To recognize the idea that they may be tapping into something genuine that Catholics like myself could learn from. But that was way beyond bad. I will take nuns in polyester pantsuits and Marty Haugen songs over that any day.

I recommend this for Julie:

If O. J. had used one of these, he wouldn't have gotten blood all over those gloves....

"What's Crackin'" must be a direct descendent of the (celebrity hairstylist) Jonathan Antin's phrase (usually referring to his own hair, but used for other purposes): "Totally Bangin'"

EXAMPLE: "My hair is totally bangin' today."

I said before that Carl looked like either Pauly Shore or the guy in the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Commercial (not Fabio, the one with the key), but also see a Jonathan Antin wannabe here.

I thought I was the only one watching Carl - it's Carl - Carl...
