Huckabee phoner
Just completed a national conference call between the news media and Mike Huckabee. My notes: 1. In opening statement, Huck's downplaying expectations, playing up Mitt Romney's money, and attacks from "Washington special interests" like the Club For Growth. "These people...
It's obvious Huckabee has a lot going for him. Still think he's too green to lead in the war on terror. But apparently not too green to promote the Crunchy message. :)
Maybe his biggest role will be as an influencer. Seen it many times before. When Huck talks about job creation, it resonates. Other candidates are forced to look into the issue more - as they should - and policies will be created. Hopefully the same will be true for the serious environmental issues we're facing.
Popular candidates leading policy creation.
The comment on 'Why Huckabee matters'isn't working.
When I've read his site and things such as these, he seems very knowledgeable about such issues. And, overall, I like the principles he indicates he will use to make decisions, cause once he's in office, then he'll have fuller information on what is going on than now. Little slip ups that everyone makes, like whether the border is on the east or west, matters little to me. Shows he's human and real.
That's a shockingly sound analysis of the situation in Pakistan. I'm guessing he didn't write it and hasn't fully absorbed it - otherwise, why refer people to it without making the same points to prove he has a good command of the subject. Nevertheless, that he has adopted such a position does show decent instincts in foreign policy. It makes me take him more seriously, which the casual adoption of things like FairTax does not.
I don't know if he has a chance, but then again Arkansas doesn't make for foreign policy expertise. Clinton got himself elected in 92, and if he'll listen to his foreign policy advisors, then Huckabee just might make a good President.
That was a remarkable speech. Interesting that Obama has said some similar things on the Democratic side ...
Still, the fact that Huck seemed to have trouble recalling it this week signals that he doesn't have his foreign policy advisors on speed-dial -- which, now that he is a serious presidential candidate, he needs to.
Though he certainly has limitations, I'd love to see Huckabee win a few primaries, even the nomination. It would help upend the cynical, conflict-based mentality (which is so good for fundraising, and so bad for governing) that seems to dominate conservative and Repub circles.
One can only hope this speech is an indicatpor of at least his williongness to go to the experts when the need arises. I would like him to revisit the fair tax issue. Yes, our tax system needs revamping--desprately--but a national sales tax would be dangerous and extremely hard on the poor and middle class. I'll be looking closely at Mr. Huckabee. I wonder if a Huckabee/McCain ticket could be possible.
There's another Margaret on this blog! Weird. Anyway, I shall hereafter attach the first initial of my last name. But please note that MargaretE is the original Margaret. (And welcome to the new Margaret!)
Rod, I tried to leave a comment on the next post, "Why Huckabee Matters," but it's not working. So here I am. Just wanted to say I think you're absolutely right about the "gut" thing. My mom, a major "small-government, low-taxes, borderline libertarian" conservative, saw Huckabee at the conservative summit hosted by National Review last year in DC, and absolutely fell in love with him, despite what she sees as his "fiscal liberalism." His authentic personality, his old-school morality, his strong family values... they were so apparent and so appealing, she was willing to overlook the other stuff. (This is a HUGE deal for my mom!) I've heard that story over and over. We should not underestimate Huck!
6. What would you do about jailed Border Patrol officers Ramos and Compean if elected president? Said he would review their file, possibly first day in office, and if half of what he's heard about their case is true, he'd grant them a pardon. Huck said jailing them seems "outrageous," and said Ramos and Compean "probably should have been given awards, or rewards, for taking out a drug dealer."
Wow.
If this isn't catering to a core fringe that's blind and ignorant I wouldn't recognise catering to a core fringe that's blind and ignorant if it jumped on my back and started sucking on my neck.
We can understand Libby's avoiding jail time because, well, he is in the inner most circle of the in crowd. But for a President to pardon two men tried and convicted by juries of their peers and then sentenced by our judicial system because some people suffer from terminal ignorance but still have the right to vote is scary, real, real, real scary. This is the same kind of logic that's got us upside down with Blackwater in Iraq.
Once again the moral compass of the moralists of the conservative side seems to be haywire, probably from unuse than misuse.
Since Bnet is not letting us post comments on the other Huck thread ...
Rod:
From Balz, you are clearly picking up Michael Barone's ongoing theme of Republicans being the "discipline" party and Democrats being the "therapy" party.
The interesting thing about a Huckabee/Obama contest would be that Huckabee is a "discipline" candidate with an undercurrent of "therapy," and Obama is a "therapy" candidate with an undercurrent of "discipline."
Which is why I sense a contest between them would be both polite and highly useful for America.
Obama and Huckabee are symptoms of the same problem-Americans are children. We'd rather be lied to, if politely, by happytalking nonsensical BS artists. "Connectors" indeed. Keep in mind "connectors" like Bush and Clinton brought us to this current mess.
We have spending out of control, to the point that the US dollar is now that Monopoly money currency everyone else tosses in the junk drawer after a vacation; an oilman president who did less than nothing to address our enegery situation; we are militarily ridiculously overextended and fighting a pointless war; and the border is totally unsecured. But if some blathering buffoon "connects with you on a gut level", make him president. Great idea!
Whn I read Mr. Dreher(who I like and respect a great deal)write about Huckabee or Andrew Sullivan drivel on about Obama, I think you guys are hitting the sauce from the moment you wake up until the time you turn in. God,are we totally F___ED if intelligent people are buying this imbecilic gibberish.I'm not sure either could run a paper route or a 2 car funeral procession.
What does Obama stand for? Anyone have 1 substantive thing, other than Obama is a swell guy? Bueller?
Whether he wins or loses almsot doesn't matter; Paul has my vote. This country needs political electro-shock therapy to start to understand that lovely speeches do not a president make. Are we electing a real leader to clean up the mess, or a secular high priest to preside over the funeral?
In the immortal words of noted conservative Johnny Rotten, have you ever felt like you've been ripped off?
"What does Obama stand for? Anyone have 1 substantive thing, other than Obama is a swell guy? Bueller?... Are we electing a real leader to clean up the mess, or a secular high priest to preside over the funeral? " Bugg
Inasmuch as you have invoked the name of Bueller, I will answer your inquiry and pose one of my own:
Obama stands for the same things Billery stands for--Socialism and secularism. They are two peas in a pod, except that Obama still has the ability to feel shame, and has some ethics.
Now permit me to ax you this: Why do you delude yourself into thinking that there is a dime's worth of difference among Obama, Billery and Paul regarding "a real leader to clean up the mess"?
Paul, unlike anyone else in this race, sees that we have a serious problem-we aren't following the Constitution-spending run amok, another undeclared war, a foreign policy that ignores both Washington's parting admonition about entagling alliances and Eisenhower's farewell warning about the military industrial complex driving State and DoD policies. We have gone from "Don't Tread on Me"to "F___ You; Pay Me!". These are not things a great heartwarming State of the Union address are going to solve;quite the contrary, it's how we got here.
I readliy expect Paul will lose. So did Barry Goldwater, but history has given him the ultimate decision over that thieving liar hack LBJ.
"So did Barry Goldwater, but history has given him the ultimate decision."
I don't know what world you're living in, Bugg, but it certainly doesn't resemble this one. Since Goldwater lost, we've enacted Medicaid and Medicare under Democrats and a drug benefit to the latter program under a Republican. And those were just the beginning. No matter who is elected next year, there will be national health insurance for all befor the end of his (or her) first term. And Social Security remains - as it has always been - the Third Rail of American politics, no matter how it must be ultimately funded. There is always a lot of talk about privitizing this and doing away with that government program, but when push comes to shove, we'll talk about your benefits, but mine are non-negotiable.
JLF:
I think what Bugg meant is that, POLITICALLY, Barry Goldwater was the John the Baptist to Ronald Reagan's Jesus, and that Goldwater's willingness to be beheaded (politically) by LBJ ultimately made the world safe for Reaganites like, um, Bugg and Cleveland.
I'm in my early 40s. I do not expect to ever cash an SSI check, and I'm planning accordingly. We need a real leader, who would level with all of us and acknowledge the fiscal structure of this country is a mess and has to be dealt with honestly.Or it will get mcuh worse.
It's beyond simply conservative; it's a question of where this country is going.Obama and Huckabee are sweet-taling liars(as are other candidates), but I guess that's what sells. It's truly scary-what does it say about us collectively that we'd rather hear flowery rhetoric than face our real and serious problems?
As to my orignal point-we are in fact children-just give us more programs, damn the fiscal bankruptcy and worthless curency. But Obama and Huckabee are great speakers! Take that to the bank! Yeah!
Bugg, almost everything you said is obviously true--and obviously irrelevant.
Do you actually believe that, even if Paul won, he could be "a real leader to clean up the mess" or provide "political electro-shock therapy"? This "mess" was caused and is sustained by an attitude of greed, laziness and secularism on the part of millions of Americans. Liberal and "progressive" politicos cater to this attitude and are rewarded with votes (power).
Get real, Bugg, eight years of Paul not only couldn't kill this sickness, it wouldn't make a pimple on its derriere. Democrats and RINOs would strangle every one of Paul's efforts, and override every one of his vetoes. Paul's Presidency would be a sad joke, conservative Republicans would be helpless, and eight years would be lost to the cause. You and Rod are dreamers. That's fine, but our country needs realistically smart voters, not poets.
Anyone who wants to cure our country's sickness--and the war is not a part of it, but that's a different argument I have with you--better get real and vote conservative Republican (e.g., Romney) who could energize the Party and the masses, ala Reagan, to overcome the Democrats, fix the Supreme Court and chip away at the economic mess.
If I were the Good Lord, Duncan Hunter would become President. Since that ain't gonna happen, we have to recognize reality and vote Romney.
