Tony Blair: Catholic, or "Catholic"?

Sunday December 23, 2007

Categories: Catholicism

Former British PM Blair was received the other day into the Roman Catholic Church. There is, of course, controversy. Some Catholics rightly point out that as a politician, Blair pursued policies that directly contravened Catholic teaching. Other orthodox Catholics have said that the better course is to welcome Blair into the fold, and hope he repents.

What do you think? Me, I'm not sure. Before, I would have been really steamed, but now, my inclination is to be more merciful, and therefore to be glad that Blair is a lot closer to what I believe to be the Truth, and to pray that he repents and converts more fully. But really, I'm not altogether sure.

One thing I am sure of: I really don't understand how a man can affirm that he believes everything the Catholic Church teaches to be true (which Catholics must affirm), and still believe the things Tony Blair does about abortion and other matters, unless he has repented.

UPDATE: I thought about it a bit more, and it could just be that whatever problems he has affirming Catholic doctrine, that Blair sees in the Catholic faith the source of life, and he's drawn to it, despite his brokenness and failed understanding. His church is no longer my church, so it's not really my business, but I will say thank God for Tony Blair's conversion, and pray that as he grows in faith, he will become more orthodox (and dare I say, Orthodox). Anyway, Pope Benedict has expressed gratitude over Blair's conversion, and if it's good enough for Benedict, it's good enough for me.

Max:

You said Pope Benedict was fine with you.

Then you said you were being sarcastic.

What was I supposed to think?

As I said before, NO to being Larry Parker the lawyer. Sheesh.

Oh, I see. Yeah, the sarcasm indicator post was an afterthought regarding the post about "O Temerity...etc" i.e., I really didn't have a problem with PBXVI.

Timing is SO critical to communication.

Are you SURE you're not the lawyer? Larry, there's nothing WRONG with being a lawyer. Even Jesus would kick it with the lawyers. ;-)

I have nothing against lawyers.

I'm going to interview to work for some on Thursday (doing promotional work for a major Northeastern firm).
