OK, you're Mitt Romney. You get your clock cleaned in Iowa, a state where you spent massive amounts of time and money. You chalk up your loss there to Evangelical enthusiasm for Mike Huckabee. But what happens when you get...
One wild card in the Michigan race is that the Democratic primary is essentially null and you may see some Democrats voting in the Republican primary. The Democratic party is punishing Michigan for moving up its primary, and only Hillary and Kucinich are on the ballot. There has been talk this week of getting Obama supporters to vote "uncommitted" on the Democratic ballot just to show a vote of no confidence in Hillary, but the fact still remains that there could be some weird things going on on the Republican side if many Democrats turn out to vote in that primary instead.

After just watching Obama lose to Hillary I'm putting my crystal ball back in the drawer. Maybe if we all go back to studying sheep's entrails and cow's liver...
No one really has any idea how this is going to end up in either party.

I'd say we're looking at a McCain-Huckabee race to the finish.
What a choice!
An old crank with a special enthusiasm for Amnesty and unlimited immigration and a preacher who takes his foreign policy advice from Tommy "Flatbrain" Friedman. Oh, preacher also is a big lover of illegals.
Does GOP elite seriously think that base will come out for for of these weirdos?

Any candidate who loses a state that shares his home state's media market -- and then (likely) loses the state where his father was a political legend -- would withdraw from the contest if he had any shame whatsoever.
But then, we're speaking of Mitt Romney ;-P

I like the GOP race and how it is shaping up. I am very comfortable with my choices being McCain or Huckabee.
mik_infidelos let me point out something. I am not sure you have been observing but the GOP elite have not exactly been backing McCain(remember he was dead) or Huckabee. For some reason some bargain was struck on ROmney.
McCain and Huckabee have got here by sheer will power alone. Not from alot of help from the establishment

You didn't pay attention. Till his disaster with McCain-Kennedy-JorgeBoosh crash-the-nation amnesty bill, McCain was virtual nominee as far as conventional wisdon in DC was concerned.
Only rank and file revolt against that atrocity made establishment to realize that McCain has no chance because of his support of Open Borders and Amnesty.
Establishment likes old crank, establishment doesn't like the snake old salesman but is willing to tolerate him as they know that in the end Prez Huck will sign amnesty bill.
On another hand establishment hates Tankredo and Hunter. Probably hates Fred Thompson also.

This is ridiculous. In one post you acknowledge how dead wrong you were about Hillary, and in the next you say Romney's dead. Absurd. This guy has been the only constant for the last few months. He comes in with strong 2nd's and wins a small state. He's hardly dead. There are people out there still considering Guliani's stragety, and you say that about Romney? Just admit that you hate the guy and are trying to sink his ship with your wishful analysis. Then you state that Huck has a better plan for immigration and the economy... silly. I'll let Mark Levin speak:
"Heading into South Carolina, where illegal immigration appears to be the biggest issue among Republicans, Huckabee is going to support a constitutional amendment prohibiting birthright citizenship? Did I not hear him in several debates, including on Sunday, admonishing those of us who've long opposed birthright citizenship, about God's children coming out of the shadows? Is this not the same man who only a few months ago supported McCain-Kennedy?"
Let's be honest about the issues here, and not ride the superficial Huck-Obama wave of emotion.

There's a difference between the GOP elite and the media elite and DC elite. The GOP elite LOVE Mitt Romney. The other two hate him. Your guess is as good as mine for why. I think they hate him because he's the biggest threat, but then I'm a huge Mitt supporter. The GOP elite love Mitt because he stands for what they believe in, they are the ones who really care about the issues and have done their homework, (not just listened to what the media have to say about him) and have found him to be an outstanding candidate.
It's interesting that less than a month ago, there had been over 100 negative press released from the DNC on Mitt Romney, (more than any other republican candidate) and only 4 on Huckabee - the last one being in March. I don't know about the past few weeks, but that tells me that the DNC is more worried about Romney than anyone else.

The McCain/Romney race wasn't closer because (probably) independents felt that Obama had it wrapped up, so they voted for McCain. This ended up vaulting Hillary to a win.
Romney is still in it. He has the most delegates. He's come in first in one race and 2nd in the other 2. That's not a bad showing.

et all:
Huckabee's idea about non-birth citizenship can become a big problem.
Most countries have duel birt-citizenship and then nonination at some older age,i.e. 19 or 21.
Germany's old citizen by Blood has created several problems: we have third generation- German born- who are still Turks, Greeks, etc. They can't vote and can be deported to 'their country of orgin' for certain crimes; this is enacted through the court system. This also restricts some job catagories. They, the family, generally pick a bride or groom from their village of orgin. Marriage of 1st cousins is quite normal for Turks and Arabs. This is against German Law; the marriage takes place in 'their country'.
The US imigration and illigal populations problems should be discussed and debated-pro & con- and not just slap-dash ideas acted upon; bandaids only wash off in the end.

Yes, the Manchurian Candidate. Who knows what is inside is head? Romney is a cipher. The best I can tell is that he wants to be the CEO-In-Chief. While I appreciate that he is willing to compromise to achieve progress (we need more of that in Congress), it's not entirely clear to where he'd ultimately like to go.
I look at Romney and I think: Hmm... a smarter, more photogenic Mike Huffington. Unlike Huffington, I think Romney has some things in mind, but like Huffington, it's obscured by smoke and veils. Nothing sinister, just amorphous. I think the GOP elite like him because he's one of them: Extremely rich and unlikely to rock their boats. For example, Romney is all for alternative energy unless it involves wind farms near likely donors.

Mitt could still have chance in Michigan as he is a Michigan boy. It's gonna depend on how many people actually go out to vote in the primary. That said, we're being punished here in Michigan for moving our primary ahead of schedule. A lot of Dems are not on the ballot now. I think Hillary still is but Obama is not or vice versa. A lot of us here in Michigan are a little miffed by these puntive actions about moving up the election. The economy here is in the toilet and we're not getting any attention from the national candidates. Free trade has not been good for Michigan.

The glorious news so far: Giuliani has finished in single digits in both Iowa and New Hampshire.
Which means that the only candidate in this race who had the potential to be a worse president than Bush, is now DOA. Gloria in excelsis!

I not only think that McCain and Huckabee will be the last candidates standing on the GOP side. In one form or another, I think they're going to be the ticket. They've been very careful to avoid stepping on each other's toes while tag teaming Romney, and I expect they'll do the same to Guiliani further down the line (assuming he still has any steam at all left in him after the early states). If Romney loses Michigan, he's toast. No matter how he tries to spin it, there's no glory in a Massachusetts governor taking the "silver" in New Hampshire.

Michigan voters know the candidates. If you don't want the ones on the ballot, then do a write-in.
The GOP establishment loves Mitt Romney. What's that mean? Let's see, we've just finished 7 years of that.
1. Tax cuts to the rich.
2. More tax cuts to the rich!
3. Growing deficit, but who cares? Let's give a tax cut to the rich.
4. Morning news: Oil companies making the biggest profit in history! .
5. Secret energy meetings, fully supported by a Supreme Court justice who just happens to hunt with the defendant, followed by rising oil prices.
6. War followed by Halliburton reconstruction.
7. Torture.
8. Lots of talk about saving babies.
The GOP establishment loves Mitt because he'll do their bidding. The good ole boys will all get richer.
Stop it with the amnesty stuff. Anyone can see that it doesn't matter what people in South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, etc think. They haven't gone blue in years, and they probably won't start in 2008. Any smart candidate of either party will work really hard to make the minorities in Florida happy. Fences, deportation, and denying birthright citizenship is going to have the Hispanics flocking to the voting booth to vote Democratic.

I have found it interesting as I watched “nightline” after each election that they give everyone a chance to speak accept for Mitt. After Iowa they had Oboma and Hillery give a speech and they spoke personally with Edward. Then the talked to Huck and ignored Mitt. Last night they Had Hillery, Oboma and McCain give a speech and they Did not let Mitt say a word even though he has come in a stong second each time. They only made disparaging remarks about him. This is topical of the media coverage. Do we really want the media elite telling us who should be the next president.
