Why can't I abide Mitt?

Thursday January 3, 2008

Categories: Republicans

I told a conservative friend this morning that I couldn't really articulate what it was about Mitt Romney that put me off him so strongly. On paper, he seems decent enough. I am certain he's smart, sane, upright, competent, and so forth. Not a man of strong ideological conviction, but do we really need that in a president at the current moment? I think not. And yet ... I just can't abide the guy.

Well, I don't have to think about it anymore. Ross Douthat explains it all for us. And he says the problem withh Mitt is apparent in this ad:

Had YouTube issues yesterday ...

Mitt is obviously leaning on his fellow Mormon, Stephen Covey, for far too much advice ...

Could his tone possibly be any more wrong for a worried America?

"Republicans are a homogeneous group of people who are fond of aristocratic structures based on birth and money..."etc, etc.. Franklin

I think you confuse the Rockefeller wing of the RP with Republicans in general. But so do a lot of people.

Ipse dixit and q.e.d., Cleveland. If the Rockefellerians are the only ones doing the talking, the rest of us cannot be expected to paint them all any differently... without some effort expended in examining them, that being my main critique of the broad brush you regularly use on the denizens of the other side of the aisle. I'm in the balcony seats, and I get splattered by the same paint. I really dislike smelling like turpentine all the time. :-\

"...the Rockefellerians are the only ones doing the talking..."

That has NEVER been the case in the RP, but it is an example of the broad brush Liberals* regularly use on the denizens of the other side of the aisle. Franklin, I'm in the balcony seats, but I get splattered by the same paint. I really dislike smelling like turpentine all the time.

Seriously, the Rockefeller wing has never been in control of, or been allowed to speak for, mainstream Republicans. It's the wing of the Party Liberals tell you is in control. In truth, there are as many if not more fat cats/foundations in the Democrat Party, and they ARE in control: George Soros and left of center foundations such as Ford, MacArthur, Rockefeller and Carnegie are examples.

*I was going to say "lying Liberals" (the full name of most of those on the left), but in your case, Franklin, I've come to realize that you, to your credit, are not in that majority group.

In my experience, Cleveland, no one expects a Republican to be about anything but big business, big profits, and big breaks from government for those businesses. We can quibble about it forever, but it's much more about perception than anything resembling the truth... something which, I fully agree with you, seems to be lacking from both sides.

Thanks for the acknowledgment, good sir.
