Boston scandal keeps on giving
John McCormack, the Catholic bishop of Manchester, NH, was a protege of Cardinal Law's in Boston, and one of the worst Catholic bishops in America in terms of molester cover-ups. And now he -- and his chancellor, Fr. Edward Arsenault,...
This is like a "he said / she said". Hard to tell.
Yes, that's true -- but what's interesting about this is that the dismissed priest troubled to file a lawsuit. That doesn't make his claims true, but it gives them more gravity than mere gossip. You've read me here complaining about how during 2002 and 2003, when I was writing a lot more about the sex abuse scandal, I would talk to many Catholics, including priests, who were full of stories about bad behavior, of which they had personal knowledge. They wanted me to write about it, to bring the malefactors to some sort of justice. I'd tell them without court documents or some kind of paper trail, and/or without their willingness to go on the record with their accusations, there was no story.
Well, Coover now has created a story. Again, it doesn't mean he's telling the truth here, but he has put something on the line. A lawsuit like this is newsworthy.
". . . discovered large quantities of pornographic materials, guidebooks containing locations of homosexual meeting places nationwide and sexual attire including items consisting of leather and chains in multiple locations in the church rectory and garage;"
This is now called the Massachusetts public school system. GLSEN, PFLAG and the Democrat party see to it.
HELLO?
More power to him. I doubt he would go to the trouble of filing a lawsuit if the allegations were unsubstantiated.
This is one of those times where people should be grateful for the legal system. Sometimes it's a private lawsuit like this one that brings corruption out into the open.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like ... victory.
I have no idea if this story is true, but what's telling is that it wouldn't surprise me at all if it is. How sad to be so disillusioned with one's own church that this craven behavior elicits nothing more than a shrug.
And what is it with NH and aberrant priestly behavior? I thought it'd be more sedate here than in MA... sheesh! I hope Coover kept photos of the stashes or some diary of findings; having handed over all the evidence, istm he'll be hard-pressed to prove anything. What saddens me most is the fallout when any Christian's failures become public fodder.
Thanks for the post Rod. It's greatly appreciated.
I think Fr.Coover will have enough evidence to prove the false committal and forged physician at the least.
And more importantly IF Fr.Coover did what says he did and the Bishops' response is accurate. (I can't say for certain.I've just seen patterns.)That would make Fr.Coover a very courageous priest who is suffering for righteousness sake, the Gospel and the people of NH and he deserves as many prayers as we can send his way. Just saying. . .
God knows the Truth. So if it's God's will, Angels and Saints defend Fr.Coover in this battle. Win the victory Jesus won. The good people of NH are depending on prayer and a focus on Jesus to get through all of this.
Jesus we trust in thee.
God save us. Pleeease.
But I thought that homosexuality didn't have anything to do with the scandal....
fbc,
No need to be sarcastic. Yes, it is largely about homosexuality. That may not be politically correct, but that is what much if not most of what it is rooted in. Of course, even that will not explain some of the actions of some.
I wonder if both Fr. Coover and Bishop McCormack have a heavy homosexual past. I know we should not generalize too much, however.
fbc, goodguyex:
Let us remember that openly gay people operate much more, well, openly. The sub-culture we're talking about here is one that is based on secrecy, intimidation and hypocrisy in word and deed.
There is a big difference, so let's modify that "homosexuality" to be "distorted, secretive homosexuality".
I dunno, Rod. I'd be a bit careful before jumping on this bandwagon! Maybe it's just because I'm old (65) and the older I get, the more cynical I get! I no longer believe that when I read a story in a newspaper, I'm getting all of the facts. I think there's a lot missing here.
Look, the Union-Leader story is a bit sketchy. Porno in the rectory? No hint of whom it belonged to? What's the story on the bingo receipts? Lawsuit over unpaid student loans? True? If so, kind of unseemly for a priest, don't you think?
Too many loose strings here!
And Jim, I think you're onto something!
Not saying it's a slam dunk for Coover. And I do not know him personally. But this isn't the only case of porn being found in a NH rectory. Another case or 2 have made the news. Coover and McCormack just may be 2 priests who work on exactly the same level of power plays. (ie. McCormack maybe met his match.)
Bishop McCormack has had MUCH more than his share of heavy-handed responses to dissent. Closing offices, taking over annual celebrations, throwing his weight around in a big way when such a response was completely unnecessary. I could list 10 up here in NH off the top of my head.
Carolyn Disco, who's son is now a priest at the St.Anselm Abbey, and who was once a small town editor, is the one to listen to. She's been tirelessly working on this story since it broke with a reporter's experience and a Christian's heart. I think she has a comment on the Union Leader story's combo box.
Also, I'd be interested to know if Fr.Coover defaulted on the student loans before or after he was dismissed from the priesthood and his state job taken away. Looking at the dateline it seems like the defaults occurred after the other facts occurred.
Don't believe everything you read. In order to be committed to a state hospital a psychiatrist must have solid evidence of a severe mental problem along with the person being dangerous to himself or others. The devil is in the details, which we do not have here.
Since the story goes back to 2002, I bet he made no copies of anything with evidence. No one knew how big this thing would get by then, no one knew how far the list would go when it finally blew off.
