"Once" in a lifetime

What a marvelous, marvelous thing that Glen Hansard and Marketa Iglova won Oscar's Best Song for "Falling Slowly." If you haven't seen "Once," the film from which the song comes, please do yourself the great favor of renting it on DVD. It's magnificent. Here's a clip of Glen and Marketa's Oscar acceptance speeches. And below, here they are performing "Falling Slowly" on the Oscars. If you know this beautiful handcrafted film, and you know the back story of the film, and if you know that they fell in love while promoting the film, well, it's hard to watch this moment of triumph on the global stage without getting all misty-eyed:

If you like, check out this clip from "Once" in which the song is introduced:

"Glen Hansard/The Frames are my new favorite performer/band"

I haven't liked their last couple discs as much as some of the earlier ones -- DANCE THE DEVIL and FOR THE BIRDS are fantastic.

If you like Glen & what's-her-name's music, you should check out Damien Rice. Somewhat similar stuff. In fact, they toured together.

Bigger than U2? I don't pay much attention to music but I'd be surprised if many people thought that. Then again Bono is more of a tax dodger these days than a singer.

I saw this movie last night on PPV and I'm afraid I'm going to have to add it to the "movies you just don't get" list. Not that I thought it was a bad film, it's just that after all the rave reviews, I was expecting something more.

That's too bad, Nick. I was floored by it. I almost still can't quite believe such a film was made, even after seeing it. Almost like it was a dream.

Oh, I sould also mention that these two (the Swell Season) are touring this summer in the U.S. Coming to my part of the country in June. Maybe the missus and I can go to a music show we BOTH like for once :)!
