Today's NYT has a story on the fast-declining appeal of the Clinton brand. Folks just don't much care to turn out to hear ol' Slick speak. Here in Dallas yesterday -- a place where Barack Obama packed a downtown arena...
Considering that it may be their only chance to vote against Hillary, not surprising.

I like Mark Shea's comment here, that he's enjoying "watching the Clintons swirl around the drain."
I still think Bill was a good president overall, taking one thing with another and remembering not to expect too much. Obviously not a good moral or patriotic example for the people, but he was the best economic leader we've ever had, and he did at least have enough sense to avoid any massively expensive and endless wars on the other side of the world.
Hillary, alas, seems to have none of Bill's good sense or charisma, and all of his arrogance and sense of entitlement. Good riddance to her.

I find it interesting that while the Democrats struggle to decide between Clinton and Obama it may be Republicans, in the form of cross-over voters, who actually choose the candidate for them.

Does anyone else think that in Bill Clinton's heart of hearts, he has it really good now(on his squalid terms, anyway). So much so that while he's invested in her campaign as his legacy, he might not really be all that dissappointed if she lost. It would mess up his good thing-hot&cold running blondes and big checks for little work across the globe. Being 1st Gent would mess that all up. The big sign-they won't release their 1040. To most normal people, his be a bizarre existence. But that has been par form the course for CLinton since Day 1.

Well, Dems have selected already candidate for Repubs, The Stupid Party.
The old goat with no brain who loves to call Repubs racists and xenophobes has never gotten more than 30% of conservative vote and got minority of Repub vote in all early primaries. Dems and indies voting in open primaries have elected liberal multi-culti RINO 100-years-in-Iraq warrior.
Stupid party has become more stupid.
Evil party will have Barak Hussain Obama and his America-hating wife in the White House.
You choose, squishy left-of-center "conservatives".

I can't help but contrast the laudatory comments praising the late William F. Buckley in the blog entry above with this post. Some of us, like me, have as high regard for the Clintons as do those praising the legacy of Bill Buckley. For all their obvious flaws, the Clintons remain two enormously talented individuals whom I believe are truly dedicated to this country's best interests.
Does that mean I don't see the flaws in the Clinton legacy? Of course I do, but it would be refreshing to see a bit less rejoicing at what appears to be Hillary's demise as Democratic front runner. That would show the kind of civility for which the posters above are rightly praising the late Bill Buckley.

As an old West Wing fan, I'm reminded of the time that Republican lawyer Ainsely Hayes is confronted by her conservative friends when they hear that she's accepted a position as a counsel for the Democrat-controlled White House. They begin slurring the President and his staff. This was her reply.
"Say they are smug and superior. Say their approach to public policy makes you want to tear your hair out. Say they like high taxes.and spending your money. Say they want to take your guns and open your borders but don't call them worthless. . . . The people I have met have been extraordinarily qualified. Their intent is good. Their commitment is true. They are righteous, and they are patriots. And I'm their lawyer."
The degree of Hillary bashing on this blog, and in general, shows just how intellectually and morally bankrupt much of the New Right has become, the results of which can easily be seen in the economic, foreign policy, and fiscal ruin that has beset this nation. Contrasting this with the relative peace, security, and bounty of the Clinton years must truly sear the thoughts of those who have supported the Current Occupant in his destruction of so much that Americans hold dear.
That this is obvious even to most Conservatives can be seen in that the only candidate that they could bring to bear in this election is the most moderate, left-leaning of the Republican lot. This choice practically screams "We were so wrong, and we know it, and want to go in the other direction, but can only go so far due to our own pride and unwillingness to confront the disastrous outcomes of our previous poor choices." McCain's front-runner status is surely the faint "mea culpa" of the battered Republican Party in America.
The Clinton's are far from perfect. But compared to the last eight years, I'd elect Bill or Hillary "President for Life" if that's what it took to spare our nation one more week under the current corrupt administration.
I can only pray that Obama or McCain, since that seems to be the choice which will face us, will find it in themselves to somehow repair our tattered international image, renew our commitments to law and justice, dismantle our nascent torture state, rebuild our greed-addled economy, and in general, put us on the path to once more being a great nation.
And as for myself, I would be deeply grateful to be able to do half as much good for the world as Bill Clinton has done before I die.

There is just no comparison between the Clinton and Buckley. Buckley was intelligent, principled, and courageous in the face of adversity.
The Clintons are hated for a good reason.
"..intellectually and morally bankrupt..."
Sex Scandals? Impeachment? War in Serbia/Kosovo? China? Clinton was probably our nation's most intellectually and morally bankrupt leader. It's pretty hard to top Clinton.
Now, the Clintons are socialists and were communists when young. Socialism and Communism don't work, which is why the Soviet Union collapsed and China is trying to phase out references to Mao in their textbooks. Europe's economic growth is stagnating under the mass of taxes and regulations imposed on them.
Clinton had nothing to do with the prosperity of the 90s. Regan before him laid the foundations that made the tech boom so great.
"... but don't call them worthless..."
I wouldn't have called them worthless back in 1992, but now that know how awful they are, they deserved to be bashed.

I saw Bill Clinton at Mountain View College yesterday and that turnout was good. Especially since it was quite cold and outdoors. I was able to 'meet' him with a quick handshake. But yes, I also saw Senator Clinton in Oak Cliff last Friday, only 4 days prior. And the feeling of importance and immediacy was eroded, and as you say, the 'Clinton brand' too.
Not that long ago President Bill Clinton was the 'political rock star'. Now, as Britney Spears is in a psyche ward, Miley Cyrus is the rage. Ah politics and the fickleness of fame and fleeting fortune.
Meanwhile, as my sister succinctly said; when this is over he will still be an ex two-term president respected internationally, and she an American Senator. So don’t cry for them, San Diego.

Sex Scandals?
Unlike the Republicans, who would never run someone who's cheated on his wife.
Impeachment?
Blaming the Bill Clinton for his impeachment is somewhat akin to blaming JFK for his assassination.
War in Serbia/Kosovo?
Yeah, because stopping ethnic cleansing? Way way worse than invading a place and causing it to start. (And by any standard of the Iraq war, Kosovo was an amazing success.)
China?
Yes, Clinton stupidly listened to much to the right-wing DLC for foreign policy and continued what the right had started. Thank goodness Bush fixed out China policy. (Remind me what he did again?)
Clinton was probably our nation's most intellectually and morally bankrupt leader. It's pretty hard to top Clinton.
I'm going to assume that "It's" was actually short for "It was" instead of "It is", and while I don't agree that it would have been that hard to be worse than Clinton, I will freely admit that Bush has gone well beyond the call of duty there.
Now, the Clintons are socialists and were communists when young. Socialism and Communism don't work, which is why the Soviet Union collapsed and China is trying to phase out references to Mao in their textbooks. Europe's economic growth is stagnating under the mass of taxes and regulations imposed on them.
Whereas our economy is flying off into the sunset. Or at least started that way, then caught on fire and crashed into the ocean because Bush filled our gas tank with sugar water instead of gas.
Incidentally, no one but you is buying that socialist/communist stuff.
Clinton had nothing to do with the prosperity of the 90s. Regan before him laid the foundations that made the tech boom so great.
The tech boom did not cause the prosperity of the 90s. The fact we actually had a functioning economy caused the prosperity of the 90s.

Andrew, perhaps you hate the Clintons for what you believe are good reasons. Allow the possibility that you may also be blinded by your hatred of them, just as some of my liberal friends are blinded by their hatred of George W. Bush.
The Clinton "brand" may be out of favor at present, but I don't believe that the Clinton legacy will be confined to the Lewinsky sex scandal. I believe, for all their flaws, the Clintons are good people who genuinely want to do good.
And I've seen no evidence to suggest that they were socialists or communists in their youth. Being part of the "New Left" doesn't qualify.

Unless there are landslide victories for the senator from New York next week, historians will trace the Clinton's mutual decline and fall to Bill Clinton's brutal Shermanesque campaign, rampaging through South Carolina on his wife's ostensible behalf.
