From the Miss Emily Litella File, remember the reports that Mikhail Gorbachev has embraced Christianity? Gorby says, "Never mind."

The interesting thing is that witnesses reported Gorby knelt at the tomb of St. Francis for about a half-hour and seemed to be in prayer. This is not the sort of thing a confirmed atheist would do. I'm guessing he is probably exploring the faith but for some reason is not ready to make a public conversion yet. Hopefully he will.

For now I'll trust what he says about himself. Also I think atheists are capable of moments of silence and reflection without it meaning they're even looking for God. Possibly he was meditating on history or nature. St. Francis is loved by many conservationist and Gorbachev once said nature was in some sense "his God."
