Opening Pandora's box

Let me give you the best tip you'll hear all week, unless you're hooked up with an ace stockbroker. A friend and reader of this blog tipped me off to Pandora.com. It's an online jukebox that creates an Internet "radio station" playing only what you want to hear, and stuff like it. For example, you can go to Pandora, create an account, type in "Chet Baker," and it will start streaming a Chet Baker playlist, as well as cuts from other artists whose work sounds like Baker's.

And it's absolutely free.

When you find something you really like, Pandora provides links to iTunes and Amazon.com in case you want to buy the single or the disc. It's a great way to discover new music. My pal e-mailed yesterday and said I should go to Pandora and type in "sarum chant," then sit back and enjoy. They don't have much sarum chant strictly speaking, but they have a lot of medieval music that sounds like sarum chant, and I've been listening to it for some time here at my desk. Wonderful stuff.

Trust me, Pandora is totally worth the registration process. If you give it a try, let us know in the comboxes what you think.

Update/Bummer: Pandora has never heard of Arvo Part or John Tavener.

actually, I have a Arvo Part station on pandora. You have to do a search with the word "Part" and not the whole name "Arvo part".

Weird. I'll try it. Thanks.

It worked; I found Tavener, too, by leaving off his first name. Go figure. Thanks for the tip.
