The Legend of Old Greg

Friday May 2, 2008

Blogging will be light on the weekend. I leave you with this extremely weird, compulsively watchable BBC comedy short about a scaly man-fish. It's a bit risque', just so you know, my fuzzy man-peaches....

There's a role for Miley Cyrus somewhere in the feature film remake.

As if I didn't already prove almost daily my bona fides as what Paul Newman, as Harper, would call a "physic" in sustaining all manner of odd coincidences, there I was, fixing to wrap up (mistyped first as "warp up") a long web session in order to phone my second-oldest friend Greg, whom I've known since high school thirty years ago. Just one last check of my iGoogle home page, where a feed from this here blog sits as the top-right gadget box, where" I spy a fresh entry:

The Legend of Old Greg

Cue Twilight Zone theme, grooveworn though my mind's copy has been long since...

I hope to play the clip linked above once my sluggish laptop "warps up" its own weekly scans.

Btw Rod, that's fuzzy little man-peaches. Don't mess with Old Greg's love games.

In this light, with you and the tutu and the seaweed, mdavid, it's, "Ole" Greg.

I love old greg. I am glad someone I consider an intellectual finds it funny. I thought I was just stupid for thinking it was one of the funniest things I had ever seen.

Who doesn't love Old Greg? Then again, I have a weakness for that kind of humor. I have a weakness for just about any kind of humor. I even went to see "Jackass" and laughed so hard snot came out my nose. Donna, please send me a photo of yourself so I can gaze upon the face of charity, and in time, repent...

Rod I'm thrilled you've discovered Old Greg...he's taken colleges and prep schools by storm. Be sure you watch Part II, discover what happens to our hero Howard Moon and his friends.

Someone at work said the mighty boosh was a bit weird and now that I have seen some of it I'm forced to agree.

A lot of absurdist humor is so inherently anarchic that it takes a while to understand the context for it. My son (now 24) used to watch "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" and I despised it. Then one day, for reasons I cannot explain, suddenly got it. It was hilarious. Same thing with "Mighty Boosh" which my daughter showed me. I thought Old Greg was vaguely annoying and disturbing. Once I gathered in the other recurring characters -- like the Moon (my favorite) --- the funnier it became.

Great comedy, by the way, is almost always vulgar in the context of the milieu in which it emerges. Rabelais was trashy. Swift was trashy. The Marx Brothers were trashy. Mel Brooks was trashy. Monty Python was trashy ... etc., etc.

Well, I adore Ignatius Reilly and all his belching and farting...

This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. The first time I watched it I didn't laugh at all. Then I showed it to my hubby, who thought it was the weirdest thing he'd ever seen and mumbled something about British humour, but then I started laughing at it. A few hours later I want to know what else happens to Ole Greg. Now I am obsessed and cannot get that song out of my head. Who thinks this stuff up? What are they drinking?

You won't believe it- I watched the entire episode WHILE DRINKING BAILEY'S! It was much funnier with the creamy beige.
