[Erin] Is Obama snubbing Muslim voters?
This New York Times article raises the possibility: While the senator has visited churches and synagogues, he has yet to appear at a single mosque. Muslim and Arab-American organizations have tried repeatedly to arrange meetings with Mr. Obama, but officials...

Obama calls 2 Muslim women to apologize
Sen. Barack Obama personally called to apologize Thursday to the two Muslim women from Michigan barred from sitting near him during a campaign rally Monday because they wore Islamic head scarves.
One of the women, Shimaa Abdelfadeel, told the Free Press that Obama called her "to personally convey his deepest apologies and acknowledge that this was inexcusable."
Obama also left a voice mail for the other woman, Hebba Aref, 25, of Bloomfield Hills, according to Abdelfadeel.
A phone message from the Free Press left with an Obama spokeswoman was not immediately returned.
Obama volunteers didn't allow the two women to sit behind him at a rally at Joe Louis Arena on Monday out of fear their Muslim head scarves, known as hijab, would create a negative impression.
"We both immensely appreciate the senator's phone call and his commitment to remedy this issue," Abdelfadeel said.
"We commend him for displaying qualities befitting an effective president," she added.
Abdelfadeel, a Sudanese American, said, "We are ready to move forward."

John E:
No one missed the follow up to the story. And certainly not the New York Times. The REAL follow-up is the question why his campaign is putting distance between himself and the Muslim community?
Why not at least have the decency to respond to their invitations? Barack Obama is a phony.
"Even some of Mr. Obama's strongest Muslim supporters say they are uncomfortable with the forceful denials he has made in response to rumors that he is secretly a Muslim. (Ten percent of registered voters believe the rumor, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center.)"
10% believe the lie! Erin, how about some follow-up on the success of the GOP lie machine in spreading disinformation about their political opponents?
Does truth matter anymore?
Muslims are political pariahs. I have a hard time seeing any politician wanting to have a strong affiliation with them.
Steve
Catch 22. What's he supposed to do?
He should differentiate being Muslim from being a terrorist. Muslims are suspect in this society because of terrorism. It should be possible to welcome Muslims into his coalition of supporters while rejecting terrorist completely. That is a challenge for Barack, and our society as a whole.
This is goofy stuff.
McCain took the endorsement of Rod Parsley, who equated Muslims with anti-Christ.
Obama may be snubbing Muslims, but apparently he welcomes the support of Hindus.
Today, in New Delhi, India, a dozen Hindu priesta chanted around a sacred fire as a group of Indians offered prayers to the Hindu god Hanuman to grant victory to Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama.
According to the Associated Press, Obama supporter and Democrats Abroad India Chairperson Carolyn Sauvage-Mar wore traditional Indian turban to the sacred event and flashed the victory sign as she was surrounded by devotees of Hindu God Hanuman.
Hanuman is the name of a Hindu monkey god. Hindu priest Brij Mohan Bhama will send the statue to Obama next week, devotees of the temple said Tuesday.
It is indeed sad. A President needs to be the PResident of all the people
President Bush doesn't get any credit for doing this, but immediately following the attacks of 9/11, he invited American representatives of the Islamic faith to the White House.
It was an important symbolic act and drew the distinction between sincere people of faith and the terrorists who have hijacked this Abrahamic religion. During the past seven years, the Bush administration has taken great pains to avoid causing any insult to sincere Islams. Some have suggested that at times this has gone too far, but the contrast between Bush and Obama on this is impossible to overlook.
If Bush could do this, why can't Obama do this? Is he a post-racial unifier as he has promised from the beginning of his emergence on the national scene ... or just another political hack?
Is he a post-racial unifier as he has promised from the beginning of his emergence on the national scene ... or just another political hack?
He's a candidate running for office amidst Internet rumors that he is Muslim, which is considered a slur among those who believe it. A candidate desperate to control his message is always in a bind.
Daniel: "A candidate desperate to control his message is always in a bind."
Your description sounds like that of a political hack.
BO threw Grandma under the bus ... then Reverend Wright ... then Father Pfleger ... then campaign finance reform ... and now Arab American voters.
Enough with the Freeper madness.
"And Shimaa Abdelfadeel, the other woman allegedly excluded by the Obama campaign, was chair of SAFE, a University of Michigan-Ann Arbor group that hosted the 2002 Divestment Conference against Israel at which "Annihilate the Jews!" was chanted and Islamic Jihad founder Sami Al-Arian was keynote speaker. She's the author of vehement anti-Israel vitriol and propaganda."

Is it true? If yes, than enjoy.
We await with bated breath your revelation of how many Muslim mosques Mr. McCain has visited, Erin. Is McCain snubbing Muslims too?
Talk about yer 1-sided 'reportage'.
Obama is a political hack, an eloquent hack, but a hack all the same.
recovering ex-Pentecostal:
The issue is not visiting Muslim mosques, but Obama's campaign choosing to push Muslim American women out of a campaign photo with the candidate. The equivalent would be McCain's campaign attempting to push some former American POWs out of a campaign photo with McCain. Imagine the uproar if that were to ever occur.
Got it?
It isn't?
The very first line quoted: While the senator has visited churches and synagogues, he has yet to appear at a single mosque."
Methinks it is about "visiting Muslim mosques" yet Erin gives us no indication whatsoever how many Muslim mosques Obama's rival has visited.
Why else the post, but to slur Mr. Obama (who, btw, has personally apologized for the mistake his staff made).
Got it?
Muslim women=American POW's? Are you serious?
Steve
How come people ask: "Is it true? If yes, than enjoy.", but never add, "If not, stop spreading rumours/lies/innuendoes/slurs."?
Please address what's a person to do to stop false rumours. Isn't bearing false witness a sin anymore?
"(Ten percent of registered voters believe the rumor, according to a poll by the Pew Research Center.)"
And, it seems, 100% of right-wing bloggers will repeat the rumour. And then repeat it again. And then yet again. (How many threads must we endure on this topic, especially considering that even Erin acknowledges it is not true.)
I question their motives.
REP, I think your issue is with the New York Times, whose article casts the question in terms of "Why hasn't Obama been more welcoming of Muslims?" etc.
I think the perception is that American Muslims tend to vote for Democrats, so why hasn't Obama's campaign sought their votes or treated them like Democratic constituents?
" ... so why hasn't Obama's campaign sought their votes or treated them like Democratic constituents?"
The question raised by the New York Times is a good one. President Bush treated these voters with greater respect following the 9/11 tragedy than Obama is now. Bush invited spiritual leaders of the Arab-American community to the White House and drew a clear line between people of faith and the terrorists.
Part of the problem for Obama is that he has made absolute statements about his faith affiliations ("I've always been a Christian" ... and ... "I've never practised Islam") which are contradicted by the simple facts of his life and by those who knew and remembered him as a young person.
In late April, Daniel Pipes wrote a detailed article for FrontPage magazine entitled, "Barack Obama's Muslim Childhood." The son of renowned Harvard historian Richard Pipes, Daniel Pipes is no obscure internet blogger but rather a veteran commentator and scholar. The article can be read here at: http://www.danielpipes.org/article/5544
When you compare the absolute denials issued by Obama and his campaign ... against the facts laid out and assembled by Pipes, you're drawn to a simple conclusion: Obama would have been better off admitting the complexity of his own upbringing, including a not casual acquaintance with the Muslim faith, rather than trying to make the blanket statements he has made about his faith.
Bush invited spiritual leaders of the Arab-American community to the White House and drew a clear line between people of faith and the terrorists.
Of course, the right--including our host--criticizes him at every turn for not taking a strong enough stand against American Muslims.
He then declared war on a Muslim country, confusing the American people about who was a terrorist and who wasn't because of course any Muslim country contains terrorists and has weapons of mass destruction.
He then opened up a prison off the shores of the U.S. in order to imprison Muslims, many of whom had no connection with actual terrorists.
Yes, he is the picture of Muslim enlightenmen
Obama is a politician, period.
Mark Shields(a staunch Dem)says that Obama's dropping public financing from his campaign was an "epic reversal."
David Brooks, commenting on the same topic said something to the effect that if Obama was willing to abandon his stance on this issue, then what wouldn't he do?
In other words, Obama will do and say anything to get to the White House.
He knows that some folks think that he's Muslim, so he is not about to allow any Muslim women to sit behind him at a rally!
Some of the comments on this thread and the one that talked about Obama's birth certificate show why he has to keep his distance from some Muslims, particularly the ones that don't dress in Western style. But the concern for the feelings of our Muslim brethren from the side that usually bashes them and talks up the dangers of Eurabia and the like is truly touching.
"I have a great deal of sympathy for American Muslim voters who feel disrespected by the fact that the Obama campaign is keeping its distance. But as a social conservative Catholic voter, I can assure them that it's not much better to be eagerly courted once every four years--only to have all the soft promises and strong platforms vanish into the pale dawn the morning after election day, leaving in their wake famous quotes about suckers and fooling people and a feeling which can only be described as "voter's remorse."
Oh, I see-- you're discriminated against, just like them!
Even when discussing their issues, somehow, it's all about you and YOUR pain.
Give me a break.
I think we all need to hold off and watch what changes are really implemented before we start passing any judgement on Bhama.
