Stunning summer cocktail breakthrough!

Tuesday June 10, 2008

A "eureka!" moment here at Your Working Boy's home laboratory. On these scorching summer days, it can be a comfort to have a frosty vodka cocktail at the end of a long workday. This afternoon, I discovered a bevy of frozen fruits in my freezer. So I threw some frozen strawberries, peaches and pineapple into the blender, sloshed some cranberry juice and Tito's vodka atop it, and then put in the secret ingredient: half a habanero pepper.

Hit "liquefy." Pure bliss.

I don't like sweet drinks, but this one was fine, because it had no added sugar. Best of all, the utterly scorching presence of the habanero contributed the perfect counterpoint to the cold, sweet fruit. I wouldn't recommend this for everybody; you've got to be a superhot pepper aficionado to enjoy this. But I am, and I did. I don't think any other pepper would have worked. You need that white-hot Scoville whine of the habanero to make it all come together.

That makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it.

And just pennies per serving, for the frugal alcoholics out there.

I made another one tonight, using the top half of the habanero. The one with most of the seeds. Oh, children, my stomach is a slough of Satanic despond.
