Byzantium on the Bayou

Categories: Orthodoxy

Like Father Matthew Jackson of Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church in McComb, Miss., put it, for the first time since the Creation of the world, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom will be offered in St. Francisville, La., tomorrow morning (that's Saturday morning, at 10 a.m.). It will be at Market Hall on Royal Street downtown; here's the webpage for the St. Francisville Orthodox mission, which has all the information you'll need. It'll last about 90 minutes to two hours, so don't worry about being late. But do come, and see and hear and smell (incense, woo!) how ancient Christianity is celebrated liturgically. The liturgy we'll be praying -- yes, I'll be there -- is more or less the same one written by the fifth-century Bishop of Constantinople. If you're a seeker, or just a curious aesthete, we'd love to see you.
