CNN just reporting that, according to a senior (but unnamed) US defense official, the Pentagon has asked Turkey for permission to send US warships into the Black Sea to provide "humanitarian relief" to Georgia.
Not good. Not good. Pat Buchanan wrote earlier in his column:
Americans have many fine qualities. A capacity to see ourselves as others see us is not high among them.Imagine a world that never knew Ronald Reagan, where Europe had opted out of the Cold War after Moscow installed those SS-20 missiles east of the Elbe. And Europe had abandoned NATO, told us to go home and become subservient to Moscow.
How would we have reacted if Moscow had brought Western Europe into the Warsaw Pact, established bases in Mexico and Panama, put missile defense radars and rockets in Cuba, and joined with China to build pipelines to transfer Mexican and Venezuelan oil to Pacific ports for shipment to Asia? And cut us out? If there were Russian and Chinese advisers training Latin American armies, the way we are in the former Soviet republics, how would we react? Would we look with bemusement on such Russian behavior?
For a decade, some of us have warned about the folly of getting into Russia's space and getting into Russia's face. The chickens of democratic imperialism have now come home to roost -- in Tbilisi.

I do not see any problem with sending warships to the Black Sea. Sure, they may look imposing since they are American 'war' ships, but merely carrying in humanitarian supplies and personnel to a war torn region does not suffice into a conflict with Russia's Black Sea Fleet. In addition, Canadian and Polish ships will be joining American warships, so this is a NATO mission or a three nation cooperative. The combine fleet of two other allies who will probably be spectators will not be all too happy if for whatever reason the U.S. Navy attempts to tussle with the Russians. Basically, it is highly doubtful we want to start a mess in front of our friends. So far, all I've heard that the only possible warships that will be used to assist in the mission is a command ship, a destroyer and a coast guard vessel - Not exactly a selection I may look as a real threat, more or less a reasonable size group of ships sending humanitarian aid.
So again, how is this bad? Because it is a slap in the face to Russia that we're sending warships to the Black Sea to provide assistance to Georgia? Doubtful, since we already told the Russians beforehand, and they have no rejections, thus far - unlike our missile agreement with Poland, which I would call a REAL slap in the face.
Mr. Buchanan, Sir, you remind me of Mr.Chemberlain, and other "wise" westerners, who sold it out to Hitler and allowed nazis to roll over Czechoslovakia and Poland. Later it took thousands of American lives to defeat Nazism, which BTW until certain moment was feeling pretty comfortable in "old wise" Europe. Today u and your "wise" kind are selling it out to Nazi-Fascist Russia. Keep doing this and chickens of your homo-sovieticus style "wise" efforts will come to roost in your yard, Sir. As fact of a matter, some of them are already here and might end up in the White House.
The sad thing is, if "wise" guys like you win there won't be any D-Day to save your deirere later(unless you already managed to make necessary arrangements with Kremlin).
