Sarah Palin's people

Thursday September 4, 2008

Categories: Abortion, Republicans

Suann Therese Maier has a terrific, terrific essay on the First Things blog about why she's fired up for Sarah Palin. There's a reason why this woman has singlehandedly turned this race around, and Suann speaks to it. A lot of it has to do with having the opportunity to stand with a woman whose beliefs and experiences are sneered at by people who fancy themselves her betters. Excerpts:

I will vote for Sarah Palin because she has guts. We've never met, but I suspect I know something about her life, and so do a great many other women. I know what it means to have a son with Down syndrome. I know what it means to talk a good line about religious faith and then be asked to prove it. I know what it means to have a daughter pregnant and unmarried.

In fact, while we're on the subject, I also know what it means to have two grandchildren born out of wedlock, a son struggling with alcohol, two grandchildren with serious disabilities, putting myself through graduate school while simultaneously caring for a husband and children and teaching full time--and a whole lot more. This is the stuff of real human love; this is the raw material of family life. And those who think that Palin's beliefs and family struggles are funny or worth jeering at, simply reveal the venality of their own hearts.

This is the stuff of real human love; this is the raw material of family life. True. Magnificent.

Reaganite,

I take your response as accepting the idea that she has played this Bridge to nowhere story every possible way, and always to the benefit of Sarah Palin. There isn't a twist or turn in this story that speaks well of her integrity.

Now recall that this is how she introduced herself to the nation. That was how she pitching herself, as a reformer who had said 'no thanks' to Congress on the Bridge to Nowhere, on her first day as VP candidate. No media worth its salt would take someone at face value, especially one who is obviously lying to them.

I wasn't there to see it, and it wouldn't surprise me if the media went overboard. But the media is about unearthing dirt, and she gave them the opportunity. It looks like she started it. Lie to the press on day one, and you are in for it. And you should be.

It's fine to indentify with a candidate, but ask yourself if you're qualified to be the leader of the free world. McCain wanted Lieberman. The right forced him to pick Palin. What we're looking at here is a man unsure of what he believes in and a woman who believes god wanted a pipeline built in Alaska. Republicans are afraid of everything but they hide thier fear behind fake patriotism and "values". Palin will be exposed the first time she contradicts herself in front of a big crowd.

If you're voting for President based on religious reasons than you are doing the same thing radical islamist do when they make leadership decisions. They follow radical clerics..you follow radical fundamentalists...what's the difference?

We do not need for politicians to teach us moral values. Hopefully, we have enough of a brain to do this ourselves. Sarah Palin is by far the most under qualified vice president in history. I do not care about her views on abortion, gay rights, or what religion she decides to follow. I honestly believe that McCain did not pick her. She is either mentally disabled, or just totally stupid. Mr. Obama will have my vote.
It scares me to think that this woman could possibly be in charge of our welfare.
