I'm hearing that there's a discussion now about what kind of puppy the Obamas should get for Sasha and Malia when they move to the White House. Now that our Roscoe is home from doggie ICU, and he survived the dread parvovirus, we've made a video appeal to the Obamas to adopt a rescue dog from the pound. My unsteady young cameraman, he of the iron-clad syllogism, points out that technically, Roscoe did not come from the pound. True. He was an abused stray we rescued. Still, you know what I mean. Here's the video:
UPDATE: Obama just said in his press conference that they have to get a hypoallergenic breed because daughter Malia is allergic to dogs: "Obviously we'd prefer to get a shelter dog, but most shelter dogs are mutts, like me." Funny!

Obama should know that the shelter dogs really adopt you first, and let you think it was your idea.
ha ha ha...that is so cute, Rod! I have cats that have either been rescued or from the pound. It is definitely the best way to go.
Roscoe is a cutie. And I love that your son reminded you he wasn't -- technically -- a pound puppy.
So cute.
Here's a toast to all us mutts out there. And to think that one of us has been elected President. Cheers.
That's a very sweet story, Maria. Anybody who hasn't clicked on the link to see a photo of Richi has missed a great picture. Awwww! And Awwww, cuuuute!! to Roscoe, too.
And now I'm going to try to provide enlightenment without provoking more controversy on the abortion vs. small animals in trouble tangent. Everyone has a different set of variables by which they measure pain, and a different empathy scale based on personality and personal experience. And our perceptions differ, as well. What to one person is a larger than life, adorable live infant with all attributes of a human being, to someone else is an unfinished, peanut-sized creature with no functional consciousness. What to one person is a soulless bio-machine put on earth to be useful to humans, to someone else is a soft, furry, lovable friend with a capacity to feel and think. And so on, with each potential object of compassion. Who is right and who is wrong, or if there is a right and wrong to this, is an endless debate. But it doesn't surprise me that people are different. Daniel is right--we prioritize our compassion. That's why my house--and yours--isn't bursting at the seams with homeless families, pregnant teenagers, foster children, and stray cats and dogs at this very moment. That's why I have a pint of Ben and Jerry's in my freezer right now, instead of having donated the money to the food kitchen. Kind of sad, isn't it?
The only American pure bred dog is a Boston Bull Terrier. They are black and white which would be perfect for a President Obama White House. Initially bred from the English brown Bulldogs, the Boston Terrier is a perfect pet for the White House children.
We would be willing to donate our Betty Boop, a one year old female Boston Terrier.
