Al Gonzales pities himself

Alberto Gonzales, as we know and love him:

Alberto Gonzales, who has kept a low profile since resigning as attorney general nearly 16 months ago, said he is writing a book to set the record straight about his controversial tenure as a senior official in the Bush administration.

Mr. Gonzales has been portrayed by critics both as unqualified for his position and instrumental in laying the groundwork for the administration's "war on terror." He was pilloried by Congress in a manner not usually directed toward cabinet officials.

"What is it that I did that is so fundamentally wrong, that deserves this kind of response to my service?" he said during an interview Tuesday, offering his most extensive comments since leaving government.

During a lunch meeting two blocks from the White House, where he served under his longtime friend, President George W. Bush, Mr. Gonzales said that "for some reason, I am portrayed as the one who is evil in formulating policies that people disagree with. I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror."

Un-freaking-believable, this guy. By this point, I pity Gonzales too, though not for the same reasons Gonzales pities Gonzales.

What did I say that was so fundamentally wrong? How about approving torture as an instrument of state policy? Or the use of kidnapping and "extraordinary rendition"? Not being able to find the right of habeas corpus in the Constitution? Making his predecessor look good by comparison (which was not easy)?

I don't know why all these guys are falling all over themselves to "set the record straight." It's not like they are going to be held accountable for their actions. It's not like they are going to be hauled before a court as accused war criminals, which they are.

This country has no accountability, anywhere. That would be, you know, the blame game. Didn't do it after Sept. 11, Iraq or Katrina. We're not going to do it for the economy. The pirates who have always run this nation finally have what they have truly fought for: an ignorant, apathetic and pool of worker bees paid off with cheap sensations and a daft culture war and an indifferent media that goes along to get along.

We elected a leader who was over-his-head in bed. He surrounded himself with people were loyal, fiercely loyal. Dumb, but loyal. Far out of their league, but loyal. And in the Bush world loyalty trumps all, it's about who you know not what you know.

I feel for Alberto, he was so unprepared for the deep water he was asked to swim that he still doesn't know he drowned.
