It's terribly sad that civilians are dying, but surely Israel is the only country on earth expected to withstand ceaseless rocket attacks against its people from the fanatical Islamists of Hamas without striking back in self-defense. Just so we're all clear what Hamas stands for, here's an excerpt from its charter:
Hamas is one of the links in the Chain of Jihad in the confrontation with the Zionist invasion. It links up with the setting out of the Martyr Izz a-din al-Qassam and his brothers in the Muslim Brotherhood who fought the Holy War in 1936; it further relates to another link of the Palestinian Jihad and the Jihad and efforts of the Muslim Brothers during the 1948 War, and to the Jihad operations of the Muslim Brothers in 1968 and thereafter. But even if the links have become distant from each other, and even if the obstacles erected by those who revolve in the Zionist orbit, aiming at obstructing the road before the Jihad fighters, have rendered the pursuance of Jihad impossible; nevertheless, the Hamas has been looking forward to implement Allah's promise whatever time it might take. The prophet, prayer and peace be upon him, said: The time will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: O Muslim! there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him! This will not apply to the Gharqad, which is a Jewish tree (cited by Bukhari and Muslim). [Article 7]
You gotta watch out for those Jewish trees. IJS. Here's more from the Hamas charter:
[Peace] initiatives, the so-called peaceful solutions, and the international conferences to resolve the Palestinian problem, are all contrary to the beliefs of the Islamic Resistance Movement. For renouncing any part of Palestine means renouncing part of the religion; the nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its faith, the movement educates its members to adhere to its principles and to raise the banner of Allah over their homeland as they fight their Jihad: "Allah is the all-powerful, but most people are not aware." ... There is no solution to the Palestinian problem except by Jihad. [Article 13]
How can Israel be expected to make peace with devils like that? Why should Israel tolerate rockets being sent by Hamas against Israeli villages? It is terrible that Palestinian civilians are dying today by Israeli bombs. But their blood is on the hands of the jihadi terrorists of Hamas.

any free, democratic, liberal country which was threatened by fascist, murderous and evil regimes.
No bias there - nope, nuh-uh.
I'm with Will and the Palestinian people. The "murderous" thugs in that region begin (but don't end) with the Israeli government. It's only 50 years of pro-Israel propaganda that blinds the average American to this fact. Most Americans -- this blog included -- see the Israeli-Palestinian struggle in stark "good-guys vs. bad-guys" terms that just don't fit the facts.
Obviously, propaganda works.
Wellsy - I don't know how many innocents will have to die as horrible as that is. Israel should fight until Hamas stops firing rockets into Israeli civilian areas. Historically the only time they stop is after enough of them have been killed.
Hamas ended the cease-fire. Abbas & Aboul Gheit are right when they blame Hamas for what has happened.
You must be a Jew only a Jew will talk like that Israel is the only terrorist not Palestine why can Israel accept the fact that Palestine is not theirs!!!!! leave the innocent people alone. how many people will the hamas kill with their rockets tell me how many people died and also tell me how many Palestinians died we will see who are the terrorists.
lets look at it this way, logically isreal just wants peace, its the palestinians who has been fireing rockets all this time, now the jews are pissed off i dont blame them...instead of palestinians investing into other productive things they invest almost all of their resources into weapons, now look where it has gotten them into...May God have mercy on your souls.
"How can Israel be expected to make peace with devils like that?"
Yea as the first poster said, no bias there.. lol
On a more serious note has everyone conveniently forgotten that 6 decades ago it was Israel who invaded Palestine and displaced the people into the poorest regions like Gaza? Was that where Israel displayed self-defence?!?!?
Here's an abstract philosophical analogy for you.
Just imagine if one day a group of men who have had a hard life forced their way into your home and pushed you out.. they have been persecuted by others and watched their families die but does that mean they have a right to force you out of your home?
You are driven into a corner of your backyard by their superior firepower. The neighbours will not help you so in desperation you take pot shots at them hoping to drive them away from, your family.
Does that sound more like self-defence?
Israel has herded the sheep and the slaughter has begun so to speak.
Hamas is of course equally to blame for targetting civilians but Israel has it in its power to stop this conflict simply by recognising the sovereignty of the Palestinian state and returning no less than HALF all land and resources that were taken.
Of course Israel are not entitled to a stone but realistically this is the best outcome that can be hoped for.
Targetting cities knowing that there will be civilian casualties is never justified and constitutes war crimes and crimes against humanity.
